#7 is huge. I believe there's a special place in hell for Dr. Faustis FauXi. Gain of Function research, the more I learn about it, and the specific allegations being made about F's connection to the same, are Dr. Mengele-level evil. What possible reason is there to mess with an animal (bat) virus so that it can be easily transmittable to humans?? Now I'm wondering about HIV/AIDS and his connection to that research - did he mess with a monkey virus too?
Possibly unrelated, but there's a longstanding theory that AIDS was accidentally synthesized in a lab environment through unhygienic testing of vaccines on generations of monkeys over the course of a decade or so in the 70s.
The theory goes that two separate species of apes were used for testing a Hepatitis vaccine intended specifically for gay men, since it's a venereal disease, and the apes interbred and were exposed to each other's blood for years. At some point two viruses belonging to each species crossbred and synthesized into a retrovirus. The vaccine trials were successful and the Hep vaccine was rolled out in major cities almost exclusively with their gay male populations. This would be '77-'79. The first HIV cases began popping up in 1980.
