One interesting thing that came up searching "Stadler", Ferris' shadow boss in the book, is a real company that has recently (published January 18, 2022) been given a gigantic 4.5+b, largest ever, train-tram contract, which I do recall figures heavily in the book:

I am pondering if he was sexually assaulted during his hospital stay and if that is why he did the things he did.
He seems to act out wanting to have sex with unconscious males. Did someone do that to him when he was under anesthesia?
