I get what you're saying, but there are rules of the school outside of the syllabus that faculty enforce - if you were actually a professor you'd know this. Things like smoking in the class room, dress code, etc, etc, rules of the university that are not part of a syllabus.

It's against the law to deduct someones grade over a stupid face mask. The student could easily sue and win.

Can concur with Hillinsider. Worked for a university for ten years (lowly office staff), and part of my job was to update syllabi every semester. There was nothing about no smoking in class or disrespect to a faculty member. But if anyone tried things like that (they did), there were unpleasant consequences.
But not grade reductions, which is the point of the post, so we're all converging on consensus here.
Understood acceptable social norms and well documented harmful acts (cigarettes). Masks are scientifically proven to be of zero protection to anyone for protection against covid virus. Enforcement of masks is not about health. Its about obedience and control. To defend otherwise is analogous to defending the enforcement of 60s era segregation.

I was a professor for 35 years at a small college, I made over 100k for most of those years and most of my time was spent writing and reading.
I consider college, by and large (although not wholly), a debt scam in today's world. I say this as someone in their early 30s with two BAs and a Master's -- all of which I'm currently using in my career. I would rather tell folks to find success the "Rush Limbaugh" way: with a lot of hard work. (Granted, Rush had amazing connections -- but none of it would've mattered if he hadn't worked his butt off.)

To reiterate: I think your situation is a lucky one, and few who are able to become full-time professors (let alone tenured) get to spend the majority of their time writing or reading (which I view as enjoyable or enviable work activities).
The likelihood of financial and personal success is much greater these days outside of college.

I do agree with everything you're saying though.
Getting a confession in writing from a teacher that their 'class participation score' is a fraud and subject to any lie or whim the teacher invents on the spot.. that seems like a good thing to bring not to the teacher, but to the admins of the school. Employing frauds who tamper with academic records should be punished, and if the school wont take action, its time to raise hell with parents and the school board.

If this is a private school, you are in the wrong school. If you are in college/university, drop the class and change schools next semester or quarter.
