The nuclear fuel does NOT explode. The cooling water vaporizes to steam - which is what "explodes" the containment vessel.

Big red pill on energy. Nuclear is the only viable answer to replacing fossil fuels. Solar and wind are hippy fairy tales that are unreliable and enormously harmful to the environment. The scale of wind turbines and solar farms needed to supplant coal and natgas grid electricity is an unrealistic, unsustainable, and unaffordable road to nowhere. The negative public perception attached to nuclear energy stems from fears of reactor meltdown as a result of failure to maintain the constant flow of water coolant that must be kept at extremely high pressures. Pressurized water reactors (by far the most common reactor design deployed in the world) are the result of 70 year old technology. There are dozens of newer, safer reactor designs including types such as the Molten Salt Reactor which does not use water as a coolant, does not require extreme pressures, and has inherent safety. Combined with the Thorium fuel cycle, an element which is vastly more abundant than Uranium throughout the Earth's crust, would provide us with cheap, safe energy for thousands of years. I don't like the idea of buying yet something else from China, but China (and India, and others) are actively developing MSR technology which we demonstrated in the 1960s at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory but promptly abandoned, chiefly due to the ignorance of politicians. We should hope China is successful. Imagine a world where fossil fuels are no longer the principle factor in dictating national economic security for all nations.

If you knew the real story behind Elon Musk, it's eerily similar to some other oligarchs of Silicon Valley. Musk is not the genius some make him out to be. Regarding nuclear energy, he doesn't know what he is suggesting.
Did you know, there is no way of really shutting down a nuclear power plant when it is suppose to be decommissioned?

The expense is extraordinary. This is why the Department of Energy is always extending the life of old nuclear plants. It's basically kicking the can down the street. Because the NRC is extending the life of these reactors, every single one of those nuclear reactors is a ticking time bomb and another Fukishima or Chernobyl waiting to happen.
The NRC reports that there is over 71,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel in more than 30 states. Illinois has 9,301 tons of spent nuclear fuel at its power plants, the most of any state in the country, according to industry figures. It is followed by Pennsylvania with 6,446 tons; 4,290 in South Carolina and roughly 3,780 tons each for New York and North Carolina.
Most all of this is stored on-site at nuclear power plants across the nation either in cooling pools or dry casket storage. None of these storage methods is a solution to long-term storage. Cooling pools require a constant supply of fresh water. The Fukushima disaster occurred because the "fail-safe" backup power for the pumps lost power resulting in the several cooling pools to evaporate exposing the spent fuel rods to air. This caused a nuclear fission chain reaction leading to a China Syndrome of at least three reactors.
Nuclear power is heavily subsidized by the government and without it could NEVER be profitable. There is far more to nuclear power than its expensive energy. The integral byproduct of this energy is radiation that causes "aging" to the containment vessels themselves. This means the containment vessels become fatigued and brittle well before the normal life expectancy. This is why the Hanford site and the Diablo Nuclear power plant alarmingly found cracks and leaks in the units. Science has no solution to this. Yet, the NRC keeps extending the life of existing nuke plants well beyond their life expectancy.

I wonder what is stored in Yucca Mountain now instead of the nuclear waste that was supposed to be stored there? I worked on that DOE project decades ago and am kicking myself for never taking the tour when I had the chance.
Yucca Mountain was closed down many years ago because it ran out of capacity to store spent nuclear fuel. In other words, it's one giant sealed sarcophagus.
Thanks. When we left Vegas I tracked it for a while and they were saying they couldn’t store the fuel safely (which seemed ridiculous to me.) Last I knew they never used it, but I obviously missed the news at some point as I was busy raising kids 😊

I'll tell you this though, every time I post inconvenient truths about nuclear energy I am 'down-voted' and attacked. Over the years I've learned this isn't a coincident either. From at least 2003 I have posted similar information on nuclear energy and included updates over the years. Each and every time, I am attacked and/or heavily down-voted. There appears to be a powerful lobby. Try this yourself and see the results. I know I'm over the target because of the consistency of attacks. Right now, I have +5 up-votes and -5 down-votes. Coincidence? The history I have experienced tells me there's more to this than people know.
I have work in and around the industry for many years. Nuclear, radiography, hazmat and radioactive materials etc. I started trying to confront some of these outrageous comments on here only to find its a futile attempt of a long winded reply of actual facts its not worth my time after seeing, Oh yeah read decoding symbols is referenced as some proof and valid source. Sad. And you are right seems to be a effort to slide against actual info on these things, ive noticed this as well for along time.

Literally no evidence of this. We have had quite a few nations test them, including hostile ones like Russia, and we have only employed their use as a weapon in one instance.
We also have quite old tests on film.
Radiation doesnt just 'leak out into the vegetables' - that is a gaslighting take. but the fuel, and wastewater used to cool it is radioactive, and stays lethal for thousands of years
They store it, mostly on site because no mass storage sites are being approved or are viable. As the concentrated toxicity of waste eats through everything within decades or even years and spills out.
Uranium has a massive half live. Tailing ponds from mining are estimated to be lethal for 100,000 years or more.
Many lung cancers are actually from breathing Radon gas - odorless and colorless, one of the decay chains from uranium (it decays through like 8 different elements including Polonium 210 and Radon gas, before settling on radioactive lead which has a half life in its own of 22 years)
Nuclear power is reliable and doesnt emit greenhouse gas sure - but since we now know that climate fear has been lied about and is pushed by evil people who also commit evil in 100 other ways - no one should be giving a fuck about GHG anymore. The whole 'green' movement is a money grab from taxpayers to rich scumbags (who then fly around in their 5 private jets and drive 18 Hummers everywhere laughing about the idiots falling for the Green new Grift)
Nuclear power however results in a large scale buildup of radioactive waste, that is deadly for again, 10s to 100s of thousands of years. One leak, one accident - and large areas are toxic essentially forever (or until maybe bacteria that evolve to convert it slowly chew away at it) - and currently there is around 100 or so plants in North America - and all of them are storing waste on site because every attempt at mass storage has failed or been rejected. Each one is a disaster waiting to happen.
In Manitoba by Pinawa nuclear research plant they had a mostly secret underground storage pit. Because it was on the Canadian Shield bedrock and thought they could contain it for long period of time. It is roughly 400 feet deep and many side tunnels - it went up with little news in the late 80s and some local groups tried to fight it. But research after showed even bedrock was leaky enough that water would get into the tunnels and leak through into water tables etc. It leads to a river that leads to lake Winnipeg and then up to Hudson Bay and then the ocean. it was shut down after 20-30 years of importing in waste from Ontario and the US. has many tons of waste in the tunnels.
The facility was shut down, and slated to be 'decommissioned' - except because it is by lakes and many waterways, the ground has become unstable, and with the radioactive leaking inside it is not safe for people to just go digging around - so nothing is being done. Eventually the walls are going to collapse and ALL of that shit is going to start spilling into the water table, the lake, and then the ocean. And no one will be able to stop it (because they still have no where else to put it, and will no longer be able to be transported safely)
Nuclear power is NOT CLEAN FUCKING ENERGY. You get around 40 years of 'reliable green' energy - and then generations of nightmare and cancer and impossible cleanup after. As it is untold numbers of cancers are already caused by decades of bomb testing, wastewater, spills, etc - and gets into the water and air all over the planet and doesnt fucking go away for a very long time.
Just pump more oil and natural gas already.
you can reuse "spent" fuel in other reactors e.g. thorium molten salt reactors....."burn" cleaner and less hot than your uranium reactors and don't run as high of a risk of meltdown the Thorium tech wasn't pursued in the 60s because you can't weaponize the the byproducts.
That is PR stuff from an industry that doesnt actually do it. Including Bill Gates pushing for 'clean' nukes.
What is theoretically possible (and debatable as the people pushing it are also evil) - it doesnt change the massive amount of infrastructure already installed all over the world, and already a massive storage problem. Even past the fuel - the water used to cool it becomes radioactive and has to also be stored. Fukushima had so much water on site they started just dumping it into the ocean after a few years - fisheries complained etc but didnt change the fact that 100 tons a day of radiactive water was being dumped into the ocean. Estimates were it will take 40 years just to be able to plug the site up because it is too hot to even get robots in there.
The robots they were sending in would be fried within 30 seconds from the massive radiation being emitted from the piles even years later.
Elon Musk claiming he will go eat food off of that shit is pure twitter theater, or if he did he would be faking it.
Also as someone else posted in here - nuclear plants only exist due to massive, massive government subsidies, they are not economical at all. And when they reach end of life, the costs to either extend or decommission plants runs into the billions again.
Just burn coal - its dirty, but the pollution from that is far easier to manage than radioactive waste - but still better in every way than nukes, and massively cheaper too.
Thorium is a waste byproduct of mining (especially coal) and we produce a metric butt-ton of this stuff. It's like the 41th most abundant material on earth so there's a lot of it around. From a "radioactive materials handling perspective" it's already regularly dealt with in abundance so safe transport and movement of this material is already established.
I'm not suggesting that we switch to thorium exclusively as I love my gasoline and hot-rods, but the powergrid infrastructure of the USA is one of the most vulnerable targets here. The 2003 power outage on the east coast shows what could happen if there were problems with the transfer stations....those transfer stations are "protected" with what? a chain link fence and no one talking about their locations. you can google maps them and and see their locations.
In my opinion, the infrastructure should be switched to community based LFTR microreactors maybe on the county level or something... small reactors, really efficient and essentially removing the risk of large scale destruction from a single point like in 2003. this would produce real cheap energy and provide a lot of jobs as well.
There are ways to handle this material safely and this type of reactor is much safer than the RBMK, PWR, BWR, AGR, LWGR, FNR, etc. reactors. What's really neat about these is that the water would not be in direct contact with the radioactive material which greatly reduces the risk of ionizing or contaminating water.
As with anything, if these are built properly they'll be a wonderful alternative to what we are currently utilizing.

Im glad someone provided information contrary to the ever more growing responses going around like, we dont even know nuclear bombs are real and nuclear power plants, chernobyl is a psychological operation. Folks. The half lives of some of the radiaoactive isotopes in power plants and nuclear weapons are not short and just go away. The publics lack of knowledge on nuclear, radiation and radioactivity is staggering.

Climate change is going to be real - once the old technologies are released and Gods free energy is revealed to us once again. Its a lost gift to us. They took it from us and put us on limited energy that they could control and charge us for.

There are better things, like COLD FUSION which produce no hazardous byproducts and makes just as much power. The Navy's been using it in their ships for a few years now.
Exposure to the "Elephants foot" in Chernobl is still dangerous. However, there is no reason to discard nuclear power entirely. Chernobl happened because of bad design combined with an unsafe experiment leading to a uncontrolled chain reaction.

He is definitely on board with climate change... But it's actually irrelevant whether man made climate change exists or not.
The advancement of energy technologies is important to our future, as well as an improvement in overall health due to better quality air.
We should be working on these technologies for the sake of advancement, regardless of whether climate change is man made or a natural cycle.
However, we should not employ them for city, state or national energy as anything more than supplemental.
