This behavior probably doesn't come naturally for many of them, especially when they've been harangued for years that only evil bigots would ever hurt the feelings of a transgendered person. This is especially the case in a college environment, where the administration might be threatening to drop them from the team, pull their scholarships, or kick them out of the school if they don't play along.
I have seen people giving an excuse that they would lose their scholarships. I get being worried about that, but what they don't realize is if you don't take the stand now, they will continue to steal everything from you. Next will be the job or promotion. Grow a pair.

Because the best college athletes are on scholarships they are literally owned by the schools they compete for. They are not gonna compromise themselves and lose that money.

I will say, however, than many of these female athletes are on scholarships and could be afraid of losing those scholarships. Put it another way, the schools are probably threatening to dump their scholarships if they don't go along.
