I was ASW when I was in. Admittedly, that was a long time ago. My rate was AX, later changed to AW, which was the rate that flew ASW. I was a helo dipping sonar man, besides CSAR. The schools included MAD gear, and when I was aboard ship, the fixed wing squadrons did the MAD stuff.
Mad doesn't care if it's water or land. All it does is detect variations in the earth's magnetic field. The data is sent to mapping instrumentation, and is then compared to the maps of known anomalies. For instance, the Los Angeles harbor area is well mapped for MAD; the P-3s on patrol there detected an unmapped anomaly, and the helo squadrons took over, found the Russian sub in the harbor, and forced it to surface, and the Coast Guard and Navy escorted the thing out into open ocean. Yes, the nuke Russian sub was IN the harbor. Yes, if tunnels/DUMBs have enough magnetic material inside, the MAD gear will detect it.

I currently work on jet programs but we, of course, have this kind of technology too to some degree. There is tech being worked on that can detect further underground, but it's very difficult for aircraft. I know a group that has been successful in penetrsting about 40ft under the surface from the ground and can even extract cell phone data from that distance, but not from aircraft.
I was ASW as well, and it was a long time ago too. My rating was OTA (SOSUS). We used to work with the P3 crews from time to time, and as far as I was aware they only used passive and/or active sonobuoys. I recall they helped, along with a few surface ships, chase a Russian sub out of the Puget sound. Their fast-attacks (Russian) make a lot of noise when they leave with their tales between their legs, but I'm sure that crew didn't notice. EVERONE went active in the end, lol.

I have heard that US surveillance aircraft are flying the Ukraine border to give Intel and firing positions on the Russians to Ukraine. Could be a cover story though which I hope is the case. Good theory anon.
Only aircraft flying the Ukraine border are those that check in with and are allowed by Russia. All that horseshit you see on the news is nothing more than horseshit. Nothing flies over there without permission, not even drones.

Our own p-8 gave the surveillance of the Russian ship and gave it to the Ukraine’s and then they used the weapons we gave them and trained them on to sink it.
Nope nowhere did I say the Russians are the bad guys. I said that the P-8 was all over the Black Sea doing heavy surveillance before the Russian ship was taken out. And the US gave the information to the Ukrainians that were armed with the shit that was provided by The US.
