It's misleading to call them loans at all. They were never intended to be paid back; they were government grants to the businesses they shut down with covid lockdowns so that the whole economy didn't just instantly die.

Likening the PPP program to student loans is the worst kind of intellectual dishonesty, i.e. just another Tuesday in D.C.

From one angle, this looks very incriminating.

But... the PPP loans were made available for everyone to apply... and it was free money if you were eligible... so if you were eligible and didn't take the free money off the table, then I don't know how else to say it other than you missed out.

Should the PPP loans ever been offered? Well, that's a different debate. The point is, they were offered, so those who played by the rules and took the free money benefited.

Not everyone was able to obtain the monies. Legit small businesses who could have and would have used the monies to stay in business were denied.

We were denied, our banker told us months early to apply, we did, way before the announced date we were filled out and waiting for the programs to begin.

Monies ran out before we were served, I don't know how frauds got in ahead of us but they did, all over the country people defrauded the scam, er system.

We survived, not everyone did. We were deemed an essential business and could not close, not that we wanted to close, we stayed open every day, same as always. It was very difficult, those monies would have helped but not everyone was rewarded, tho plenty of scammers were.

Companies were supposed to meet strict criteria to be eligible for the forgiveness too, if they failed they were supposed to pay it back. Most did not pay it back, regardless of the rules, certainly the scammers could not show the accounting receipts to prove their need and uses of the monies.

Just saying, most of us never had a chance to obtain any help.

– changeagent 6 points 3 years ago +6 / -0

That really sucks and I'm bummed for you, and angry that that happened. I was not unaware, though, that scammers existed.

I have no idea what the politicians in this original post applied for, or whether or not they were eligible. I am not assuming, though, that they were scammers.

The program was flawed, for sure. Some states never even used all their money.

Anyway, I'm glad you were able to survive.

The ones who offer the money and the ones who (are even given the opportunities to) take up the said offer are the same criminals. It's like that Spiderman pointing to Spiderman meme. Or that Office meme which says "they're the same picture" (Corporate wants you to tell the difference between these two images).

– changeagent 3 points 3 years ago +3 / -0

I understand that they participated in a program that they approved. There is no getting around that--that is the way of capitalism: you create things to benefit.

Taking advantage of the stock market is where the criminal activity is. When government leaders do that based on insider info, that's wrong. That's an unfair advantage. The PPP loans were not an unfair advantage.

PPP loans were the ones given out to businesses during covid in order to help them pay their employees while they couldn't work or something along those lines. I think if you used the funds in a certain way then they would be forgiven.

There is certainly a big difference when the government shuts your business down then tries to bribe you with PPP loans, then use that as their "I got you moment". Businesses didn't ask to be shut down, they were forced to. Of course everyone will take the money.

▲ 9 ▼
– FullAmpleSally 9 points 3 years ago +9 / -0

PPP loans came as a result of the government shutting down business, making it impossible for many businesses to stay a float. It was a result of a terrible and wrong act by the government. Student loans are not, they are personal decisions not out of necessity where the responsibility lies with the individual.

The thing is, these ones (who already hold great power and prosperity, and can likely pay off their forgiven loans even today) had millions of dollars worth of their debts forgiven. And yet, when someone else, such as students, get what is less than 0.1% the said amount, they all bitch and cry from their high horses.

Of course they need to be named, shamed, called out, exposed, and dragged out of their respective thrones.

Hell, if you're a mod reading this, give me my shilliest shill flair already, please.

Any person with a shred of humanity, hell, even basic morality within them would call this BS out for what it is rather than seeing it as some "our side right" "your side wrong" madness. The White House argument is so moot… You shut down the country forbidding individuals to make money (other than big corporations like Walmart, Amazon, and airlines), provide these individuals with money to subsidize their losses, and then politicize the fact that these loans were forgiven as they were intended to do anyway? All while this liberal administration is sending out billions upon billions of dollars out of the United States….. makes complete sense

By the way, and just to be very, very clear, I do NOT agree with them spending billions and trillions of dollars to fund wars (and the Military Industrial Complex) either. Nor do I support these ones that the WH Twitter has (rightly) exposed today.

I'm against all spending that enriches the dark ones, and for all spending that assists the downtrodden. And this should ideally be every HUMAN'S approach to this, in any case.

– 10lbsBass 7 points 3 years ago +7 / -0

How is this hypocrisy?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– Shapirogoldbergstein 3 points 3 years ago +3 / -0

Because they are. They abused the system and now don't want others to do so. If you ever got pulled over for speeding and let go with a warning. Then later on in life you decided to become a cop and pull someone over for speeding, and it is the first and only time you have seen them do this, no priors on record, and you give them a ticket, you are in fact a hypocrite.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 5 ▼
– 10lbsBass 5 points 3 years ago +5 / -0

So they should pay back the loans anyway? Should I refuse a verbal warning from a cop and demand that he give me a ticket?

I don't think you understand what hypocrisy is. Hypocrisy is the practice of engaging in the same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another.

If these people refused to pay back loans and fought to get them forgiven then that would be hypocrisy. Benefiting from the actions of somebody else is not hypocrisy.

If they're gonna bitch and cry and scream about the "unjustness" of people "mis-spending"* taxpayer funds then they should grow a spine - AND a pair - and lead by EXAMPLE because that's what LEADERS DO.

Last I checked, leading by example was a thing, and a very, VERY respectable thing at that.

But naah, they're just gonna piss in their golden toilet bowls tonight while feeling happy that they got their nation's citizens riled up against * checks notes *, poor little students working 3 jobs to make ends meet.

I don't know if you have a moral compass (or even a humanity compass) beyond supporting every evil that capitalism does, but in case you do, I'd suggest that you attempt using it once. Cheers.

Hypocrisy is the practice of engaging in the same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another or the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform. In moral psychology, it is the failure to follow one's own expressed moral rules and principles. (Moral rules)

What's even worse is that these numbers are in literal million dollars. The audacity these ones have to compare themselves to students whose amounts come down to a meager $10,000 dollars, as also the likelihood that those who've already paid off their loans aren't even going to get any rebates themselves. And yet, these rich, filthy bastards wanting to "lead us" are okay leeching off millions of taxpayer dollars themselves, but God forbid some poor student struggling with three jobs just to get educated gets like, 0.1% or lesser of the money.

Fuck that noise.

I don't care who's running the White House account right now, but today, I'm a one hundred percent on their side. Heck, I don't even care if it was the cabal that did it (out of fear or desperation or whatever). Exposure is exposure. Light is light. Truth is truth, no matter where it comes from.

Wherever they applied for one originally. Could have been a Big Bank (such was PNC), or a small local bank, or even straight through SBA themselves.

I worked on these loans and they were the most aggravating thing, the borrowers did not have to show any proof on how they used the PPP funds.

Many people who have businesses, I noticed gave themselves all of the funds and did not disperse it correctly through payroll. They gave themselves distributions through their K-1s in the amount of the loan. Wrong.

You didn’t even need an EIN number to apply, any willy nilly person who filed a schedule C during the previous tax year was eligible.
