So I understand we're dealing with giant evil corporations here, but assuming the fees are the same, I fail to see how removing an entity from the transaction chain that could recover your money is ever in your best interests.
Paypal funded by a credit card means three different entities can refund you (eBay, Paypal, the credit card company). Remove Paypal and your options dwindle to just eBay or your credit card company. Now I've been pretty happy with eBay over the years, but I did have one instance where eBay refused to act and Paypal refunded me about $1100.
Many years ago I used to trade items and accounts in a major MMPORG. I bought a fairly high level account with quite a bit of items to trade off and about a month after the purchase the original account owner went through the account recovery process to re-take possession of the account. They probably looked at my history and concluded I bought accounts to play them and were hoping I had loaded that character up with valuable items, when in fact I was mostly a trader at that point and the first thing I did was offload everything valuable.
I sent eBay and Paypal the terms of service of the MMPORG that said selling accounts was not allowed, so technically the seller should not have been able to list it for sale. Paypal agreed and got my $1100 back. The person who recalled the account screwed themselves because I had sold two sets of armor that were no longer available in game for $450 each.
I count myself lucky that they were too stupid to have removed the funds I paid them with, so Paypal was actually able to recover my money. So, while I recognize they're evil, they did actually help me out once so I have a soft spot for them. Also, in all the years I've been using them I can't point to a single instance when my credit card was compromised by Paypal, but numerous instances where a store that didn't take Paypal DID lose my information and resulted in fraudulent charges.
You must be one lucky person then. Because PayPal screwed me multiple times. I lost 1500 cause some buyer locked my account. Take forever to release funds sometimes.
There customer service has not helped me out what so ever. My credit card company saved my ass when they couldnt.
Another thing people can do: Message small e-commerce stores you use and inform them that you would not only still buy if they switch away from PayPal, you would prefer it. Many small e-commerce shops use PayPal despite the high fees because they feel customers prefer that platform.
Paypal UK, the $2,500 issue is still live.
I've messaged them and spoken to them, multiple times, each time they said it wasn't true until I showed them their own terms, then they said "yes it's true but it's an error and we wouldn't do that to you as you are a long term customer".
But you could do it?
"We wouldn't do it, you're a good customer".....
"It was an error that is being changed"
When
"We don't know".
So they know, they are being secretive about it and they are lying about it unless pushed.
They could.
The live T&Cs absolutely state that they have given themselves the right to fine me if they deem I have breached their very wide and vague acceptable usage policy, and it states that if one has an account with them, one agrees to this.
Would they fine me? I don't know.
But as much as they keep lying about the terms existing and then claiming they are in error and will be changed (but don't know when), at this point they absolutely could fine me if I did something they felt triggers it.
"Trust us we wouldn't" is very different to "we can't".
As the Truckers in Canada found when their banks closed their accounts, or when GoFundMe initially kept all their donations and gave them to other causes and wouldn't initially refund them until people made a big deal about it.
Same thing here - they've given themselves the ability, they've been caught, and aren't in a hurry to undo it, if at all.
I don't think you are talking to anyone that actually works for paypal, but contractors overseas. This fact dodging attitude and not giving clear answers is common. They only exist to make the customer more pissed at this point.
Why do you have Paypal connected to a funding source where they could even do this in the first place? The first rule of Paypal is they can't take what isn't there so use funding sources that only have funds when you are making a specific purchase.
So in practice:
Never keep a Paypal balance.
Use one of those disposable credit card services where you can change the amount available on the card or use a debit card connected to an account with $0 in it until your transfer funds in.
I trashed PayPal in 2020. Don't remember the reason other than it was political in nature. I've canceled a lot of things and don't miss anything. Chase credit card (Gen. Flynn Canceled), Netflix (Cuties), Cable (still have internet from Commiecast), Fox Nation (2020 election call), etc.
There are other things I'd like to stop supporting. Maybe soon we won't have to if SHTF
These BASTARDS won't let me close my account - I've been trying for over week. I just reported them to the attorney generals office.
FIRST - they tell me there are "issues" with my account so i can't close. What issues? Bastards don't tell you - you need to contact support. Support is a BOT until you persist- then you get a human in India.
So I chat with person in India. Oh - your account is linked to other vendors - you need to close those. (BTW they FIRST told me they were awared I was "upset about the issue re: fees being applied to users ...blah blah blah and that this was a MISTAKE and rest assured I have nothing to worry about" ) - OK BLLSHT. I NEVER even MENTIONED ANY OF THAT. Even if I was (and it's true that's why I'm closing my account I NEVER mentioned any of that). Also they stuck a BANNER on their page when you try and close saying this was an "accident" or some word like that and it's not true. Total BS.
So then I close all those associated accounts. Fine. I think I'm done. Can I close it? NOPE. Get another "issue" with my account screen. What's the issue!?? Again I don't know.
So i open another chat. Again you wait - get a human. Then complain. Then wait as they say it'll take a few hours to get resolution.
No reply.
Then Finally on my FOURTH conversation with these bastards. And now what do they tell me!?? That it seems they can't close my account because it may be associated with and account LIKE venmo, xoom or honey!??
OK now I'm rpsht. Firstly, I NEVER used any of those apps. Thirdly, they can't even tell me for SURE if my account got linked to those apps somehow? Like WTF!??
Yeah I deleted the bank acct first - that was my first line of action. Then I removed the credit card so nothing is associated with it. But I STILL want it closed - and the fact they're essentially BLOCKING me from closing it has me irate!
I've been buying stuff, totally unencumbered by PayPal, mostly for M-4 stuff, since I deleted that Woke Crap... AR = America's Rifle. #ChangeMyMind Kek!
Indeed. And make it clear to them, every single step of the way, WHY you are doing things, in this case, removing paypal as an ebay option when you could have easily kept using it. Let them know.
I'm curious how many outraged people here who will "never use Paypal again" have multiple credit cards funding other giant evil woke corporations that hate them. I don't know what level of additional risk and inconvenience I am willing to take to avoid dealing with Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover. Am I willing to sacrifice 1% of my spending to try and keep them from getting 2.5% of it? Am I willing to pay 5-20% more plus gas to buy local with people I hope aren't Democrats?
In my saga to close PayPal - I went through my PayPal linked accounts and closed about 20 of 'em - Ebay was one of them. I did it through PayPal as they STILL are not letting me close my account! It's taking me numerous tries but I will not give up. I told them I'll report this to my attorney general if they don't fix it.
I've been trying to get rid of my paypal account that is attached to a site (digital files of graphic artwork) I buy from occasionally but they (the website, not paypal) told me if I canceled paypal then it will cancel my account with this site. If my account gets canceled, then I will lose the ability to download all the files that I've bought from them along with over 2,000 credit points that I could purchase over 2,000 files with. The website says if I wanted to cancel my account with them (and start over), then they could give me my points back when I make a new account, but they never mention anything about all the files I've already bought that I would lose. I've probably have downloaded most of the files I've bought over the last few years but haven't downloaded a lot that I've bought this year to save room on my computer, figured I'd just download when I needed the files. So I'm a bit peeved that I haven't been able to close my paypal account yet.
Unless my history is fucky, ebay was the reason PayPal got started. My 2003 brain isn't as sharp as it used to be. People were worried about ebay transactions being exposed to criminals so PayPal came along and created a way to save payment info externally from ebay. Except they are on that gay shit now, so.
It’s not as good for just finding a good deal on used stuff as it used to be. But if you are looking for a niche item and aren’t purely bargain hunting (which was my original use for eBay), it does the job better than most sites imo.
I will never stop using eBay. I use it for just about everything I can't find anywhere else. I needed an mDP > DP cable and of course nowhere else had it, and I am not supporting Amazon. Sellers there have everything and anything that you could possibly need or think of needing.
Did that a while back. Easy to avoid PP.
Yep. Payment via eBay sooo much better and eBay customer support.
I bitched about PayPal over a year ago, and they told me they were getting rid of PayPal due to eBayers complaining. It's great. F U PayPal

What was that $1100 dollar purchase or was it a selling something? And what happened?
Also Fuck Paypal

They are anti gun and anti freedom of speech.
Paypal is good protection for BUYERS, which means they're poor protection for sellers.

Fyi - Discogs uses PayPal's payment system.
Then fuck a Discogs. It's scorched Earth from here.
I prefer Iced Earth. 🙂
ThanQ for this info. Although I haven't used it recently I went ahead and deleted paypal from my Ebay account.
I trashed PayPal in 2020. Don't remember the reason other than it was political in nature. I've canceled a lot of things and don't miss anything. Chase credit card (Gen. Just deleted PP on ebay. Thanks for the idea!
Glad I got on this and closed my account a few weeks ago. Didn't think they would go to such lengths to close an account.

I'm so pissed right now i can't even.
Surely you've deleted any card info on your acct, right?
It just took me 5 minutes. I had one recurring charge for $10 a month for fag Spotify. Deleted that. Then no probs.
If I were you I'd'd be steaming!!
Rotsa ruck.
Yeah I deleted the bank acct first - that was my first line of action. Then I removed the credit card so nothing is associated with it. But I STILL want it closed - and the fact they're essentially BLOCKING me from closing it has me irate!
I'm with ya!

Thanks, I forgot to do this and just did.
eBay used to own PP. PP is actively decoupling from eBay.
You still use EBay??
What's wrong with Ebay? I still use it to find cool stuff I don't see elsewhere.
Yes. Ebay should be a utility, IMO
