Fyi - I’ve had to tap the follow button each time I visit his profile. It’s not saving the follow. Close the app and then check back a few min later to make sure it sticks
Update: I’ve followed him at least 10 times. His follower count keeps going up, though. My guess is that it’s a system overload and the servers can’t handle all the activity at once.
I experienced that as well, multiple times. Is it the traffic affecting the servers?
High traffic/congestion seems likely here. I'd say to try again maybe even tomorrow morning and it should stick.
It appears to be working now. His follower count also went down significantly, so I have a feeling the server needed to be reset

I found a few saying today is the worst day of their lives over Trump returning. With Biden still at the helm, what could possibly be wrong? haha
Their safe space is returning towards a free speech trajectory where their ideologies and shitty opinions can be challenged with other, potentially equally shitty opinions. They cannot handle that.
