Etymology answers questions that archeology can't. Language is indeed awesome.
That is a beautiful comment. Can you give me something to bite on in terms of following a reading path? First bite to follow? Thinking you have to have some work in mind cause the comment is deep.
Sorry, it was just a personal observation not from a book. Euskara came to mind though. Language isolates.Maybe that's what you meant by a bite?
Next time I’m in England I’ll go visit the hill at Torpenhow Hill.
At restaurants I always ask:
What's today's soup du jour of the day today?
No waitstaff has ever noticed what I do there.
I see you work for the Department of Redundancy Department.
Yes, our favorite supervillain is Lady Redundant Woman.
If you want to stretch it one step further, you can say "Soup/Soupe d'aujourd'hui" instead, since "aujourd'hui", while it's normally French for "today", actually literally translates to "the day or today".
So your sentence would turn into "What's today's soup of the day of today, of the day today?"

Linguist bump! Sing a quasihemidemisemiquaver!
Torpen Haugr sounds way cooler.
Norse linguistics is great. The word for fear/dread was Uggr pronounced Ug. Fearsome or dreaded was Ugsome. To be feared was Ugligr with -ligr meaning -like which became -ly. So ugly was to be feared lol
There's also great ones in Gaelic. Like the translation of cat into Scottish Gaelic is cat, it's a loan word. The word for kitten is piseag. So some trader brought them cats and by the time they had kittens there was no one to ask what they were called.
Been a while since I have seen some solid word faggin here!

Yep, it's definitely a hill hill hill hill.

I love this type of stuff. Thanks for sharing it!
This always bugged me on Ninja Warrior. They compete at "Mount Midoriyama".
yama means mountain.
Like, Japanese people don't say "Mt. Fuji", they say "Fujiyama".
So Ninja Warrior always said Mount Midori Mountain.
Everyone just ignores me when I complain though...............................
Don't you know you look silly saying that dumb shit? I don't blame people for not speaking Japanese or not speaking Welsh, but you know, after a while you figure out what happened and then you fix it so you don't look dumb?
Kinda like ATM Machine
There's a truly awful movie out there called "Manos: The Hands of Fate."
And what a great MST3K episode it was!
Personal favorite will always be THE FINAL SACRIFICE however.
Idk, just a big Zap Rossdower fan since I was young. 😁🤣
The locals really really want all visitors to know this is a hill.
Lake District. Cool !
now, that's interesting, need more posts like this one! 😆
4 times the Hill
All this hill, hill hill talk has reminded me of this old movie https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0112966/
