France maintains a sort of neo-colonial control over much of western Africa to this day. I'll grant you that understanding the Third Reich requires more than just looking at the 1930s. I think most historians start telling the story with the Treaty of Versailles and the plundering and humiliation of Germany after the first world war. The Weimar Republic was an absolute monstrosity, and it was the German people's reaction to that monstrosity that drove a demand for order. The Nazi party supplied order. In fact it supplied many of the things that the German people wanted: a villain to blame for their troubles, a viable solution to dozens of social problems, pride in their country and heritage... and on and on. The Nazi party succeeded because people wanted it to succeed and because it was giving them so much of what they wanted, many of its problems were overlooked. Some of it was willingly overlooked. Some of it was systematically covered up. When Auschwitz was found and liberated, many in the city claimed not to have a clue what was going on there. People didn't want to know, so they didn't. They had a political solution that they liked.
I'm biased. I had grandparents who lived through the occupation and who were forced into making ammunition for the Wehrmacht. They lived through some of the worst treatment people had during the war, and I struggle to forgive that kind of cruelty.
But clearly, we see that fascism was not defeated as an idea. It's ascendant. The US and western Europe are run by a similar corporate-government alliance of power that Hitler and Mussolini used. Marxism wasn't discredited as an idea. It's taught widely in schools. We have prominent people in power pushing the same racial rhetoric, using the same tactics of blaming one ethnicity for all the world's problems, using the same type of censorship regimes to control information, the same... you get the point. Our society is not better. It has fallen victim to the exact same thing as the German people did and we had the advantage of having a historical model to warn us. We've got to do better.
I don't subscribe to the 'innocence' of what the Nazis did in the 40s. They did horrible things in many countries, including my country of birth which suffered 10% population loss. In fact it is the continuation of what they did that we are living today. I mean, we saved/imported them to the US for crying out loud! Operation paperclip among other things.
However, the rise of NSDAP was a consequence of what happened in the 20s in Germany. And the same group of people was/is behind both sides. This is why I said "Cabal team 1" won WW1. Cabal team 2 was the 'losing' side. They play both sides. Same as WW2. The goal: destruction, division, desolation, slavery. What we see today.
Russia broke from the cabal (USSR was created by the cabal) and can never be forgiven by them for that, hence its current demonization.
Germans went through serious 'social engineering' in the 20s & 30s. Parallels are drawn to the US of today. However, just saying "Look at how the Germans went insane in the 30s and voted for mustachemanbad" without looking at what happened BEFORE that is disingenuous and hides the real issue: manipulation.

The German Republic are also the ones who signed the treaty in 1919. During complete political turmoil.
It was all by design, indirectly and directly caused by the "winning" side. There was no real stability in the Republic until early/mid 20s and then the great depression hit, and that sunk the entire worlds economy. Hell, even the brown shirts were founded in the 20s, even if they really did nothing of historical significance until the 30s.
We also can't ignore the civil wars that were breaking out on the European continent as well Estonia, Georgia, Finland, Irish civil war, many of these last through out the decade.

For those who want to know more, look up information about Berlin of the 1920s. It was worse than San Francisco today. Look up who were the thought leaders and the financiers of that state of affairs. While Germany was being looted, the average German's life savings were being rendered worthless by the money printer, and many forced into poverty or the sex trade, who was getting rich? Which families prospered?
When you read about those things, some of the root causes become clearer. And yes, it makes abundantly clear why Jewish people were targeted.
