I am in the camp that believes that within the last 12,000 Earth years (probably between cataclysmic ice age and 6000 BCE) there has been some level of alien (off-planet) interaction, including at the hominid genetic level. And that these interaction stories somehow dovetail into various religious "origin" stories found in many religious scriptures and storytelling/lore. Including the major monotheistic religions today. Since that interaction, written history has also been re-crafted to fit with the default view of human history with a tidy bow on it. The good vs evil may also play out at the galactic level and that we are simply "behind the curve" compared to off planet evolution. A lot of people around the globe (much fewer on GAW) will not be able to handle any revelations that even touch upon this kind of narrative-destroying stuff. My 2 cents...
I'm of the same basic opinion. The angels and demons are just variations on what has had interaction with humans, and their benevolence or violence toward our kind.
The Hopi Indian lore says the civilization has risen and fallen four times. They also believe the next fall is the last. I think these cycles of great civilizations and crashes may go back much further than just 12,000 years. They may extend back into a time the the geological activity of the earth has wiped away any evidence of the earliest advanced civilizations.
The legends we hear of lost civilizations like Atlantis are just from the most recent 'lost' civilization. Many of the 'stone age' relics we have found may be just remnants of the start of a new cycle, our cycle. Unlike the Hopi, I don't believe a future crash would be the last unless every last human were destroyed. If there are humans left the natural cycle of human existence from subsistence living to advanced society would begin again.
I think we'll eventually find out that some of our collective history was actually alien interaction. Probably some were assumed to be demons and others angels (or whatever culturally equivalent being was assigned).
