I'm teaching math now in high school, and have been doing so for a while, but to be honest I miss teaching science, especially the physical sciences. I can have a greater impact in math, I get that, but when I taught physical science I was able to inspire kids to explore the mysteries of the world around us, from the subatomic level all the way to the infinite spaces of the universe. As I look back on my career, I only wish I had discovered this earlier and had more time, not that it would have made that big a difference. I hope I live long enough to see some of the notions from childhood come to fruition before I die, i.e. space travel, time travel, things like that. Funny how that worked out.

Frens, I just want to say thank you for being a source of strength and comfort to me for the past few years. I mostly lurk, because there is still so much I am learning as I go, and it helps to come here and read the various comments and perspectives. Without going into a lot of detail, someone very close to me had been suffering from a difficult and painful medical problem for a long time that I had only recently found out about. For weeks, I prayed morning and night. A few days ago, that person indicated that they were feeling much better. Afterwards, I found myself tearful because I was so grateful this person found relief.

God is great. Multiple times in my life I have seen the power of prayer in action. Thank you, Lord, for your generosity and kindness.

Hello frens!

I'd like to give an update on my mom as she had hip replacement surgery yesterday. The surgery went extremely well and after spending one night for observation she'll likely be discharged from the hospital as early as later today.

I'd also like to thank anyone and everyone who had given prayers toward my mom over the past day whether they were written or silent. They were all much appreciated and I'm immensely grateful to be a part of such an uplifting community that gives so much unconditional support.

A thought came to me this morning. Many educational jurisdictions have laws or policies that dictate that only evidence-based programs and curricula can be used. I was thinking of Critical Race Theory in relation to this. There is no way that CRT has any evidence supporting its use. Would citizens be able to sue school boards under such jurisdictions that have adopted CRT?

Just a personal note to mah frens at Gen Chat.

Recently, I got into a squabble and scrap-up with a fellow pede. As a result, I became the fortunate recipient of a 2-day ban.

Well, I've been on GAW for a few years, and never had a ban. So I was outraged at first. Ban? Me????

I immediately wrote up a missive protesting the horrific injustice, and sent that off to a few mod-type frens.

But it didn't take long for me to get over my outrage and realize that I was over-reacting and that a ban was a great opportunity to take some time off from GAW. After a nice respite, I came back after about 8 days, and read through a few DM replies I got to my indignant protestations, drafted and sent 8 days earlier.

One reply in particular from the mod team cut through my bullshit with a vengeance. It was hard to swallow, but by this time, the time away had done its work, and I was ready to take my lumps. In fact, I welcomed them.

All in all, the experience and the feedback I got helped me to see that I've been approaching GAW with a number of sub-optimal attitudes, attitudes I wasn't aware of, attitudes which, once I became aware of them, were attitudes I wanted to change. These included an over-attachment to my own views on things, and other attitudes that weren't really helping me (or others) in the long run.

If it wasn't for that ban, who knows how long I would have remained oblivious to those attitudes?

The ban was a long time coming, not because my behavior has been particularly egregious - it hasn't - but because my attitudes and approach have been flawed in a way that I was being oblivious to, to my detriment. Ego-connected attitudes.

Well, i just wanted to report that I feel like the ban, the feedback and the support (yes, support, even though it stung a little) that I got through that process have been like a tonic, a medicine. I think it's helped me to improve my approach. More importantly perhaps, it has inspired me to aspire to be better in my approach.

It may be one of the biggest benefits of being on GAW that I'll take away, at the end of the day. (Although never say never.)

And, I just wanted to report that. Sometimes, humble pie doesn't taste good, but its medicinal value should never be underestimated. We have an excellent mod team, our collective flaws and all.
