About 3 weeks ago she broke one of her toes. This normally would not be a big deal but she has type 2 diabetes and it had a small wound on it. I did not know this(she hid it from me) and last wednesday we went off to the beach with my family. She was limping around a bit during the trip but she claimed it was just a small scratch. Monday morning when she got up it was black as can be from the tip of her toe to her first knuckle. We went to the ER and her toe is pretty much dead. She has to have it removed to protect the rest of the foot. The good news is she has great circulation of blood right now and it does not appear to be spreading but it is still scary as a diabetic. Surgery will be either later today or tomorrow. Please pray for her to come out of this safe with the infection dead and no chance to spread anywhere else. I appreciate it!

My diabetic father-in-law had a foot wound from a slight accident that would that would not heal, they amputated his entire foot. Then they amputated up to the knee. He had a prosthetic leg.
Then he got an infection that would not clear in his hip on the other side, so he was in a wheel chair the rest of his life.
To me it is barbaric to amputate body parts if non-invasive methods help . . .

To me it is barbaric to allow type 2 diabetics to roll around in their horrible diet and exercise habits like a pig in the mud, rewarding them with insulin for years instead of presenting them with a strict diet/exercise plan and a hard date of "no more insulin."
It pissed me off so deeply when I found out that losing weight gives your pancreas back the ability to generate insulin.
The pancreas isn't dead unless it goes necrotic and has to be removed.

I have a cousin who went through breast cancer 3 times, the whole thing: surgery AND radiation AND chemo. She has no breasts left now, of course.
What was her risk factor for cancer?? Obesity. She would go through all that misery and expense three times! But "can't" lose weight.

He was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in his youth, and was told he would not make it to adulthood. He is now 89 years old and still helping others overcome the disease. Terrible News brotha. I never understood the correlation between diabetes and amputations.
Diabetes can cause poor blood circulation and slow wound healing. A simple cut can get terribly infected due to improper wound care or poor blood circulation. The infection or the lack of blood flow can cause the tissue in the area to die.
Depending on the amount of dead tissue, allopathic medicine prefers to excise the tissue or amputate the problem to avoid spreading or becoming systemic. You would think by now with the advancements in allopathic medicine that they would have figured a way to resolve without amputation but what do I know? We've got enough older congress critters that you know there's some pretty potent stuff out there that we're not privy to.
Feet are the biggest danger. If the diabetes has progressed enough to the point of being out of control many people get neuropathy in their feet - they start to lose feeling or actually have pain. The reason that is bad is you could get a splinter, or a rock in your shoe, or a simple cut on the bottom of your foot and not feel it at all. Meanwhile the cut gets infected, or the rock or splinter creates a sore that gets infected. Eventually gangrene sets in and you lose your foot. That's why most health insurances require foot exams and can even allow pedicures for diabetics.
I'm type 2 and it is well under control, but I remember when I first found out I had it. I was looking at houses to buy and we went to one where the agent tried to tell me I had to take my shoes off to go inside. I was still new at the whole diabetic thing and was super paranoid, so I told her I wasn't taking my shoes off in an unknown place (after explaining why) and that I would simply leave and look at other houses if she couldn't accept that. She accepted it of course.
Fast forward 20 years and I still have no foot issues, but I still never go barefoot. Some of you might have seen me post before about how I love those MyPillow Slippers and wear them all day (working from home). That is the reason.

Shred your muscles in the gym at LEAST twice a week—muscles are calorie-hungry, and bigger muscles eat more calories!!!!! You get big muscles and they eat your calories for you, I'm talking PASSIVE DIETING, like passive income.... you get these muscles and now you get to lose calories for doing nothing!!!!!! NOTHING!!!!!

You would think someone with "mother issues" would try to get out from underneath that and ensure they don't pass that attitude onto other people (since they know how bad it was for them). Haven't people cured their diabetes with low carb/ carnivore diet?
Doctors like to say it will never go away, but keto/Atkins/low carb has helped a lot of people get off their medicine. I dropped my A1C by 7 points on Atkins. Eventually I'll get the last point or 2 and I can get off my meds as well.
Note - this is only for type 2. Type 1 is a whole different animal. Attempting a diet like keto without working with your doctor would not be ideal.
Also the first time I tried Atkins my blood sugar went extremely low several times before I figured out how to do it right. I almost wrecked one day driving when my blood sugar plummeted. I got bad tunnel vision on the interstate, but I recognized it was happening, got over 3 lanes to the next exit, and got a can of (non-diet) Coke and ate a pack of Twizzlers. I was ok in about 5 minutes. It was my fault - I had picked up my daughter at the Pittsburgh airport so we could go to my grandmother's funeral in western Maryland and didn't stop for breakfast on the way. I was also tired because I drove all night from Texas to get there and meet her. That really freaked my daughter out.
I learned to be more careful, and now that my A1C is much lower I don't have that problem anymore. If you are diabetic and contemplating doing a low-carb diet please be careful. Ask your doc for diabetes education courses/classes. They helped me a lot.

Prayers for your wife. I have been through this with my mom. She will need to take her healing very seriously. The wound healing can be stubborn.

I also wanted to point something out to help your wife in the future, because many, many people aren't aware of this: diabetes is caused by insulin resistance. And insulin resistance can be reversed with the keto or paleo diet (i.e., cutting out all carbs and sugar). It truly is that simple, but doctors never tell people that, or even hint that a change in their diet might help with their diabetes. I hope you find this information useful.

We actually just started on the carnivore diet! Meat, cheese, and eggs. Great results so far in the weight area.
That's great to hear, fren. The carnivore diet works for this as well. Some people recommend taking additional supplements to replace the nutrients you're not getting from veggies, but others say it's fine. But either way it's a very healthy diet. A lot of people among the population also have allergies to certain fruits and vegetables, so cutting all of those out makes them feel a lot better.
If your wife is losing weight it means her body has probably already become "fat-adapted", which means it's now using fat from her diet (as well as from her own body) as fuel, instead of carbs. Hence why she's been losing weight. So it sounds like her body is, already, no longer reliant on carbs, and that's great. If she sticks to this diet she'll have more energy and better health, and her insulin resistance will go away eventually.
