It's the current number of seconds since the Epoch (1970-01-01 00:00 UTC) according to Unix systems. The Epoch being represented by "0". Here is the number of seconds count right now from a computer that is running Unix:
Epoch time was chosen by programmers as a matter of convenience.
Think of it as an anchor point from which we can measure time. Just like you count up from 0, so you always know what “100” means. In order for epoch time to work, programmers had to agree on common “zero date”.
1970-01-01 was chosen, iirc, sometime after that date, because it was close enough to work and epoch milliseconds are extremely useful for recording dates. This way you can boil the date down to a simple number and always know what time it is referring to.
It allows you to ignore things like am/pm, time zones, and the like.
I don’t think there was much malice or subtext in the epoch that was chosen. It was intentionally picked as a reasonable “zero” — the zeroth minute, hour, and day on a “0” year in the “zero” timezone (Greenwich mean time).
Yeah, it's kinda like that. Fun fact: the maximum date you can represent with a 32-bit number is 19 January 2038 (at 03:14:07 UTC). So we're going to have a mini y2k where some software will need to be rewritten in order to keep tracking time. Luckily 64-bit is widely adapted so most computers will be able to keep up for millennia.
The "Consolidated Audit Trail" goes live tomorrow as well. Many in the GME world over at Superstonk see this as a big moment, and I find it very coincidental it is happening on the same day as this unix epoch clock moment you've pointed out, OP. All of it still requires the SEC and DOJ to take action, which we all know won't happen, but it is still very important in the grand scheme of things.
For those that don't know, the CAT going live signifies that any trade will have its CAT CAIS event (trade) and FDID (broker id), customer id, timestamp, security id information time stamp accurate and synchronized down to within 50 milliseconds. This essentially means all trades, including naked shorts, must be reported to the FIS reporting system, or it will be sent to the SEC for reporting to the DOJ.
"This comprehensive database collects and accurately identifies every order, cancellation, modification, and trade execution across all U.S. markets, allowing for more efficient and accurate tracking of trading activity. This significantly enhances market oversight by providing regulators with a comprehensive and real-time view of trading activity across U.S. markets." - Microsoft Co-Pilot.
Essentially, bad actors in the stock market have been able to hide from enforcement groups due to a lack of synchronized data they can take their time to forge and manipulate over time, since before this system, it's been up to the SEC to take their word at face value. This system creates a database where all trades, and anything that happens with these trades, are recorded within milliseconds of any action (creation, editing, completion, cancellation, etc.). They no longer control the data, and that to me can turn into something interesting real quick. Let's see what happens!
They are working on the flair, just 2 more weeks until it will be ready. Kek
Kekkkk
Still waiting for a Total Recall "Two Weeks" animated gif meme for this forum. IT NEEDS TO HAPPEN!
Um... you'll have to explain that 1717171717 thingie...

What does the epoch mean here?

Interesting. Thanks. So it’s a programmers/cpu’s version of bc/ad kind of?

You autist!
Thank you!
The moment of Trump’s not guilty verdict??
That aged like fine sashimi on a picnic table in the sun.
Damn that sucked. But I know that will boomerang on the left. Trump is going to remake the whole justice system. This gives him leverage.
His sentencing date is July 11, 4 days before the RNC convention. (election interference!)
Ah darn coulda sworn I saw the 17th
Could be! That would be some proof.
Well Trump's press conference will be tomorrow at 11:00 am (I assume ET). Maybe an hour and 8 minutes into it he'll play the Trump card.
That would be EPIC
I’m tingling with hopium!
As someone who had to do maintenance on a BBS system written in AWK...
You sir are now on my fren list.
I have no idea what you just said, but I'm impressed.
+++ no carrier
That's one of the few number-fag datums to get my attention. (For any newbies here, Q is the 17th letter of the alphabet).
I'm wondering what's on deck for tomorrow.
❤️ this so much!

Timestamp - it’s approx 17 hours from now: https://www.epochconverter.com/?q=1717171717
It will be 17:08 in London, UK: https://www.epochconverter.com/timezones?q=1717171717
Countdown: https://www.epochconverter.com/countdown?q=1717171717
And if course, the 08 in 17:08 = 1+7

Quality date fag. I’m all in for quality date faggotry.
Kek !
Is that GMT or some other time?
ET
To clarify, the timestamp is ET. The epoch is Zulu time
PSA: Zulu time is GMT/UTC, not the time in South Africa.
Shaka-ing.
fascinating observation fellow linux fren
I just updooted purely for the addition of a datefag flair.
Me too.
