I was on irc from around '93 to 2003ish. Mostly in #hack but sometimes I would mess with people on #2600. It was actually part of my job, which was network security at the Pentagon until I got out of the USAF in '98. My co-worker and I monitored and attacked Pentagon networks to keep them safe, and mgmt wanted us to gt into the hacker community for learning and intel. We went to all of the BlackHats and Defcons, local cons like PumpCon in Philly, and a few others. Fun times.
My username here is the same one I've used since '93.
Yep. We used to jokingly spam the channels we were in with "aol.txt" messages. Remember that? kek
Some of the channels I hung out in are still around on EFNet, funnily enough. I just checked the other day. Same bots too, and I still have ops in one of them.
Yes, it's a hand sign he learned from his Italian mother who learnt it where she grew up to "ward off the evil eye". Which just makes it fucking hilarious that "satanists" tried to adopt it.
An apotropaic usage of the sign can be seen in Italy and in other Mediterranean cultures where, when confronted with unfortunate events, or simply when these events are mentioned, the sign of the horns may be given to ward off further bad luck. It is also used traditionally to counter or ward off the "evil eye" (Italian: malocchio).
I've never thought of it as anything nefarious. It's just a "rock on" to me. This just a funny meme is all. Based on some wacky comments about it being satanic or some crap.
I've made comments in other threads how it's not a satanic gesture. I find the idea of that rather silly.
Satanic Panic weirdos were a nasty bunch that would add fantasy and perversity to any and all free speech in the metal genre. They do it with lots of things that reek of freedom.
Big-eyed u/DRan, shill-crusher extraordinaire!

Oh I remember.. I was only a kid but I'd sneak to the basement and dial up the modem and chat lol
I had one of the original AOL admins in my circle of friends back then. He would spam us with the AOL CDs at my office in the Pentagon.
I haven't been on irc for years now. Who knows - I could still have ops myself in #hack if it still exists.
Nice!
Remarkable !
came here to say this :)
The goat/devil horns just means you're a metalhead.
very true....but Dio himself called it "the evil eye". I remember that much from the metal days.
that have not ended
True ;-)

Username chek't
And heck yea! Love my metal music.
Or a Texas Longhorn student at a football game.
Exactly
Fucking correct^
I thought the third one there was a hand signal for driving in New York.
The ASL sign for "I'M DRIVIN HERE!"
This Emoji 🤘 is officially called "Sign of the horns". This Emoji🤘🏾is called "Sign of the horns: medium-dark skin tone"
This Emoji 🤟🏼 is called "love-you gesture: medium-light skin tone"
Meme is very accurate, kek.
The....SHOCKER!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
IYKYK...
u/#catdance
Teaser, pleaser, shocker, spocker, rocker, show stopper.... mini van!
Yea, I know. lmao
Right!?
I probably took that the wrong direction... maybe a bit too much for this forum, but eh, whatever kek
You'll notice I left the 2nd part out (instructions)
That's what I remember it being called IRL....Or at a metal show it was an updoot sign.
Unless George W. does that first one, then it's for the Texas Longhorns. Or so I'm told.
Ronnie James Dio is the expert. Nobody threw out more pinky / index than Ronnie, so what say he ? He was not a devil worshiper.
Thumb in for Ronnie all tour long. In front of more people than any other human.
Dio toured the entire world a dozen times at least in front of no less than 1 Billion people.
Never thumb out, so look it up. You want to debate , you got one.
I saw the Dio biography not long ago. He said he got that hand gesture from his Grandma who used it to ward off the evil eye.
Correct, it’s called an an apotropaic gesture:
I've never thought of it as anything nefarious. It's just a "rock on" to me. This just a funny meme is all. Based on some wacky comments about it being satanic or some crap.

My parents were convinced the band KISS, stood for Knights In Service of Satan- the 70s and 80s were a bitch!
I know, its vauge and beyond low hanging fruit, its on the ground.
Fu Shills - to the meme maker mad love and respect
isnt the first one "Hook'em Long Horns" too?
Now that I think of it, that first one also means "Bullshit", or at least it did when I was a wee lad.
I had no idea they used that sign in the 1890s
It actually meant WoolyMammothShit then, but I didn't want to cloud the issue.
You learn something new every day...
Thank you.
