Infiltration, not invasion

Sin is not really that hard to define. What's hard to define is the part that comes before sin.

Just like a physician cannot diagnose (or treat) a patient unless he has a pre-existing definition of health - what is the healthy state of which the disease is a diversion from - it's hard to define sin when we are not clear about what is the real, non-sin state.

I take the perspective that everything in God's creation functions according to the principle of give and receive action. Give and receive action is reciprocal in nature and underlies all productive relationships in God's universe. All relationship can be reduced ultimately to two aspects or partners interacting according to the principle of give and receive action.

One partner or aspect is the initiating aspect. It gives. We could call that the core initiator of the relationship, or subject (like a ruler). The other aspect is the responding aspect, like an object to the ruler. It receives what is given, completing the interaction. Responsive 'reflector'.

Examples: God gives us love. We receive. God gives us his Word. We receive. Our mind gives instructions to our body. It receives those instructions and responds. A teacher gives instruction to his pupils, the pupils respond and learn. This works on all levels of God's creation. A CEO is the subject, the employees, the objects. Together, they form the business. Male and female, etc.

But that's just one dimension. Once the object receives and stands in a receptive position to the subject initiator, it can reciprocate by returning something to the subject, which the subject itself can then receive and then so on. This creates a completed relationship where giving and receive are both taking place between the original initiating subject and the receptive object.

That dynamic of give and receive generates energy, all the energy required for existence, for action, and for multiplication. The relationship fulfills and advances the purpose or intent of the initiating subject. It moves in that direction.

So, what is the fall? When Lucifer, instead of being an object to God, made himself an initiating subject in his own right, and then induced Eve and Adam to a) cutoff their relationship with God (disbelieving in God's command) and b) unite with him in his intent and purpose (eating the fruit together).

Thus, all destructive conflicts in the fallen world come about when the proper initiating subject is met not with receptivity by what should be the proper responding object. Under Satan's influence, our body resists our mind and tries to direct the mind according to its desires, above and beyond the proper desires of the heart and mind. A subject initiator is like a (+), the receptive object like a (-). But in the fallen realm, the (-) becomes a (+) as well, and conflicts with the original (+). So, they repel each other, instead of cooperating. That's exactly why, as Paul said, "with my mind I serve the law of God, but with my body, I serve the law of sin". Two (+)s, one proper, the other in a position that usurps that proper position of the original (+) to stand as a (+) itself.

e.g. A man driven by lust will do unprincipled actions because he allows his body to dominate, instead of his God-given mind.

A key point here is that the positions of subject or object are reciprocal, and when they are united correctly, then the responding object can stand in a position of initiator and the initiator stand in the position of responding object. because they have already united centering on the common purpose provided by the initiator. So, the relationship is truly reciprocal. Love is given, receive, and then love is given back, and received. In the unity, they become one. United + and -, they then together form a new + as a new unit or aspect. A man and woman come together, and united, they become the new +, have children, and then relate the to children who stand as responsive objects.

So then, what exactly is sin? Sin is when any person responds to satanic direction, whether given from the spiritual dimension, or via another human, and then receiving that, accepts it, and responds, and then moves forward the satanic purpose and will behind it.

A man walks down the street. He is tempted by a satanic impulse coming from a bad spirit. He steals. He receives the satanic impulse to act (in a way that contradicts God's purpose), and executes it with his body. His mind is the (-) to the bad spirit (who in the end is an agent of Satan) which is the (+), and then his body becomes the (-) to his satanically inspired mind (+).

Lying at the bedrock of sin is this dynamic. When we form a reciprocal relationship with Satan, via one of Satan's minions or instruments (whether they are willing or ignorant), we sin. Satan initiates, we respond. That's sin.

Consider the Temptation of Christ. Satan tried three times to initiate a respond from Christ in a relationship with Satan was the imitating subject whose purpose he wanted Christ to submit to. In response, Christ affirmed that only God is the true (+), by quoting God's word and principles, and that Christ is untied with the Father as the true (+), to whom the Son is the true (-). By the third temptation, Christ had proven his unity with the Father, and as such, together the Father and Son formed a new (+) in front of which Satan (opposing (+) had no place to stand. So, defeated, Satan departed.

Defeated by Christ, Satan then targeted the Jewish people, to be a (+) to them (-) and eventually get them to unite with him to form a greater (+) that could attack Christ. Meanwhile Jesus preached in order to wake up the Jewish people and have them form a (-) to him, through love and faith.

The victory of the cross is that when confronted with the faithlessness of the people (-), showing that they had united enough with Satan (+), Christ then sacrificed himself willingly. He could have walked away, but instead, he gave his flesh (-) as a ransom to open the door to free the hearts and minds (+) of all men and women.

The reason God prepared the Israelites for 2000 years was that so when the true (+) appeared, they would recognize and respond, as a true (-). The tragedy is that due to constant failure, sin, constantly making small conditions in which they responded to and united with, as (-) the impulses and temptations from Satan (false +), they failed, as Jesus indicates in the parable of the wicked tenants.

The challenge is to be able to identify whether an impulse comes from Satan (i.e. via lies, or via misplaced impulses) and then to resist it, but instead respond always to God, our Father, through Christ, who is the True (+) for humankind.

In conclusion, Sin is the condition by which we establish a give and receive relationship with Satan by our standing in the position of receptive object to him, instead of rejecting him and standing in the position of receptive object to God, the Father.

That's how I understand it. The interesting thing here is, well, what is the true or original nature of give and receive relationships? That's what we need to understand before we can accurately diagnose sin, or define it.

PS. It is NOT the action itself that defines the sin. It's WHO initiates it. God, or Satan.
