In my opinion.... I agree with the OP but, under 'normal' conditions. Right now, they don't care about downstream issues because if they can't stop Trump right now, it's game over for them. Thus, they don't care about subsequent consequences. They can see what's coming and they know that if they don't stop Trump they face the gallows. They must stop Trump now by any means possible.
