Have similar experience. Hubs would come home from work with what appeared to be home grown tomatoes. Refused to tell me where they came from. Finally admitted the tomatoes were growing "wild" in the drying beds where he worked that a local municipality would discharge their treated wastewater.
Creeped me out at first until I read an article that in Africa watermelons are grown where water is non-potable. The melons juice is used for drinking and is quite safe since the plant filters out all the bad stuff in the water.
