I understand that a number of the red pilled has come from the ranks of the Bernie Bros. I'm curious as to why. Did they realize what socialism really is, or were they looking for the non-establisment route and realized that populism/libertarianism/conservatism is the real non-establishment?

Yes. I would think the groupism/tribalism espoused by the left would be hard to reconcile with true populism, which seems to focus on the individual.
Right, but I think that makes some assumptions about their psychology that isn't true for all of the left-wing populists.
They clearly have a herd mentality, but, I would wager that many of them think of themselves as "free thinkers", "critical thinkers", or whatever. Their intentions are often good (they genuinely think they are right and helping progress society), they are just deeply misguided (i.e., believing that socialism is good), and they often falling into the trap of de-humanzing people + proceeding to dox them.
So, once they see that right-wing populism does achieve good, say, through the accomplishments of Trump as president, they begin to question their beliefs. That's all it takes. Alternatively, fake news might turn some of them too. It'd be worth asking some former Bernie-bros (and now pro-Trumpers) about it.
An example of a Bernie-pro turned Trumpster is journalist/YouTuber H. Goodman (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDB5XReUyyqt-FTNdkzFN-A ). I haven't watched too much of his content, but, there might be something in there about why he converted.
I can only speak for myself, but my mentality was along these lines: I know that the Republicrat party is bad, and the only way to get someone into the whitehouse who will actually oppose the TPP is to elect an outsider who isn't in the uniparty club. This narrows it down to either Sanders or Trump.
Because I was still somewhat media influenced, it looked like Sanders was the only one who had a snowball's chance in hell at this. However, I understood what was happening immediately when he sold out, so I switched to Trump and proceeded to get redpilled on all the pedo shit. I already knew the Clintons were bad and running a mafia, but I didn't know how bad they really were. The only items I truly changed my mind on were tax cuts and global warming. (which are good, and a hoax, respectively)
Alot of Bernie bros got redpilled when the Dems fixed their primaries for Hillary. They started coming on to the Donald around that time looking for common ground. TPP was something specifically that Bernie Bros and MAGA were opposed too at the time, alot of them redpilled themselves.
They simply may notice who is real establishment. You know - being "socialist" and cooperating with harcore warmongers, and corpo-boys like Bezos or Gates gives them a good questions to consider because of big cognitive dissonance... They don't even need to learn how communism is evil to step against ellites. After all the question is they feel marginalized by the corporate-political elites and that's why they support/supported socialism which they thought is against elites. Welcome to the fold. I participated in the Tea Party movement in 2009-2012. Concurrently, there was the left leaning Occupy movement. Both groups actually agreed on "End/audit/constrain the Fed". Amazingly, with both sides in agreement on this, nothing has happened toward this end in that decade, until apparently Trump took some steps. To me, this lends credence to Q theory of a gigantic banking Cabal working to take over the world.

I've always argued with my friends that Bernie didn't feel "presidential" to me. I could never imagine him being taken seriously by other world leaders. Nobody understood what I meant. And it is difficult to explain. I just look at him and the way he conducts himself, I just get this gut feeling that he's going to be easily bullied by both his allies and his enemies.

It is literally wealth transfer. I am in the top tier bracket of taxes and pay over 50% all told... More than HALF mine and my husband’s hard earned money is tossed to illegals and people who get tax “refunds” because they don’t actually pay any taxes. This is why I am only going to work for a few more years and quit at a young age (both me and my husband) in order to live off the land and be self sufficient because I am so over paying for everyone else.
I did a similar thing, and I am yet to regret not having to get up and go to work in the morning, and it feels good knowing that I am not working hard to earn more so I can pay more taxes to support the insanity. Good luck.
