I agree that the 31M number is a fraction of the total views of his address in real time. Like he said...the world is watching.
31 million households that had a TV on, not how many people in the household. I believe this number is higher by the millions. For example, there are 5 in our household and when the speech was on, 3 out of the 5 were watching. I believe this was the the same across the nation, so, we can very easily double that number to 62 million.
Agreed. I work as a data analyst and after parsing data from social media trends, it was clear to me that at least 100 million people tuned in at some point, likely closer to 125 million.
And that 31M probably doesn't include many people like me who watched it online a day later because we couldn't watch it when it was on live.
