Yeah, not on my way to the grocery store in Houston, TX but props to these guys for calling a spade a spade. We know many down here in the restaurant business who are saying this exact same thing. And last week I had to make dinner reservations for 30 and 38 people in San Antonio and spoke with other restaurants who have had to reluctantly close on Tuesdays because of staffing issues.
Comrade Cooper (NC) is still paying people to stay home. (I think the government handout is through August.) I haven't seen this sign but there are lots of places that are not open for indoor dining due to lack of staff.
Yeah some places posted an update to their hours but didn't say why. This restaurant put up a sign saying why their hours were changed (now closed on Mondays and shortened their hours of operation).
As someone that spent years in this particular industry I can tell you that it isn't entirely about covid. Food has been a notoriously shit job for a long time. Particularly in the hourly wage arena. It's why I quit doing it. Its why many of my friends in the last year quit doing it. Simply put there is and always has been a trend of paying resto workers as little as possible. Finding a solid kitchen to work for with non shit bag owners is often far harder then it should be. It's also an industry that often fails to pay people outright at all. I've had it happen in more then one state with more then one owner. Bounced paychecks, short paychecks, to outright no paycheck -all long before covid. Does it mean their all like that? No. But the "its totally cause covid and people are getting paid too much not to work" is only part of the story and these scenarios in part point to a much larger and prevalent issue within the industry as a whole.
Its not just the restaurant business. Im in automotive. We can find drivers for the tow trucks. We have 6 new trucks sitting around doing nothing with 2 more on the way. But no drivers. No applications. And if somebody does start working, its only a couple days till they decide collecting checks for nothing is a better situation.
Best ribs in town but damn expensive. We order from there once in a while, usually when we celebrate something. Didn't have a reason for celebration today so we were like, why not?
But yeah since they're a local restaurant, I may just go there with my family, maybe twice a month to help them out.
That would be nice. Ribs sound really good right now; haven't had any in ages. Hopefully you'll be able to find some good stuff that's less expensive - oh, and talk them up to your friends! Thanks for the reply, fren.
Nothing personal against this restaurant but I'm sick of seeing these shortages of workers everywhere. Either pay more or lower your qualifications you're now competing in the free market against the government.
Not sure that's the issue. I live in a summer resort area of my state and many restaurants are only open in summer. Most of their wait staff is composed of college kids, and the tip money is usually really good. Has always been like that here, and those jobs were always sought after. Most of them are having a tough time getting help, even the ones that have always been first choice for summer workers.
"competing in the free market against the government"? Anytime the government is involved, it's not a free market - by definition! You'd like mortal human beings who choose to run a business to compete with a government that orders up unlimited imaginary money that it doesn't have (at interest rates it can't even pay) - and has already done so at a record-breaking pace? Not just economically - this is at a job they have to WORK, while the fiat-backed government is paying people to play video games or riot or make babies or wtfever.
I understand it's not perfectly fair I have just seen a lot of companies, not small mom and pop restaurants complain about worker shortages but ignore a lot of applications that come in based on frivolous standards.
Rubbish grammar and spelling. I would be embarrassed to put a sign like that in my business. They are clearly a bunch of retards - why are they surprised that nobody wants to work there?
I believe they're referring to the unemployment checks, I think it pays your wage you've been getting from your job plus $500 more per week or biweekly.
Anyway, I gladly pay $20 for a good burger and fries. No big deal.
But there are many many ways to use the market to help out a restaurant. Most are just so lazy or set in their ways that all they can think of is hiring more people at low wages to do their work. Mom and Pop stores have this problem quite often.
Most of the time it's gonna take the owner's brain power and elbow grease to negotiate the markets and find cheaper/better supply, figure out better price to demand ratios, and work the hours that aren't being picked up by low wage help.
Why would I raise wages if I was in their place? Seems like a terrible idea. I would CUT wages. I would tell my employees who were faithful that they were going to take a wage cut to keep the restaurant going.
Then, I would probably create a profit sharing arrangement. I would divide my restaurant into shares and "sell" them to the employees on a kind of rent to own basis. Each part of their paycheck that I had slashed would be used to buy share coupons.
Then I would streamline the menu and improve production efficiency.
Capitalism works, dude.
Where's the restaurant? I'd drive a couple hundred miles to eat there...maybe they would give me a couple bucks to wash the dishes.
This is in Ohio, it's a family restaurant, not a franchise restaurant.
A bit out of my normal radius of travel from Oregon. I do wish them well, and hat tip to you Fren.

near cincy?
Nah, up north.
Lol it's just that I don't want to expose where I live as it has a unique name, that would be easy to locate.
That's too bad - I'm in the greater Cleveland area, I would eat there in a heartbeat. I understand not wanting to dox yourself though.
Wish we had secure PM capability...
Family restaurants and family businesses are usually the best.
i've seen it all over Fl.
You could volunteer one night a week, maybe get another five or six other people to volunteer.
There's nothing more life affirming and rewarding than giving your time without expecting a return.

Wow I’m going to use this!!!!
I’ve seen the similar signs in my travels

Wow! It really is a shame
Hope you like the food and can patronize them regularly.

There's the rub- they have to pay staff more, they don't have megachain purchasing power to get cheap frankenmeats, the prices won't come down.
Why Do People Write Like That? It's Incredibly Annoying, Just Write Normally.
i saw one where it said its staff is the most diverse and we support blm
Probably the one that's paying $15 per hour with half the staff employed there. They should be going out of business very soon.

Wait staff isn’t hard to hire. It’s the back of the house positions that are the problem
Maybe where you are, but here wait staff is very hard to find right now. More money in staying home.

Didn’t the us Govt only give out like 2400$?

When your restaurant isn't doing well, you have to decide if you're going to take accountability and make changes or blame somebody else.
Sounds like instead of a "Dollar Menu" this place has a "Pass the Buck Menu"
Straight up- how much will you pay for a diner plate? Because raising wages means prices go up. $18 for a burger and fries? Come on.
Anyway, I gladly pay $20 for a good burger and fries. No big deal.
