Our first employee when we ran our dog business had left us and taken a job as a construction flagger. A few month later on the news we heard a story (which I didn’t connected the dots on at the time) that a construction flagger had been hit by someone going 40 mph. Fast fwd 5 months my daughter calls and tells me our first employee had just died. 23 yrs old and a good kid. He was the one who had been hit and was holding his sign out. There had been three signs warning that flaggers were ahead. The driver was texting and didn’t see him. The impact sent him flying and caused internal injuries, brain damage and many broken bones. His name was Cody and he had recovered enough to leave ICU and be sent to nursing home for rehab which he had done well on at the hospital but the move caused a heart attack and he died just after the move.
The driver was a young man who had a 4 yr old son who was in the car at the time. I was shocked a year later when I turned on the news on the radio and heard Cody’s mom talking to the judge begging for The Distracted Driver Bill and also leanency for the driver. She asked that he be allowed to just do community service and said she didn’t want his son to lose his dad as she had lost her son. The judge gave him a partial work release two yr prison sentence and he had to go around to schools and other venues as a speaker to talk about what happens with distracted drivers and how he unintentionally took a life.
