After discharge when patients run out of EBT to buy formula, they call the hospital expected to be given free formula to solve their problems. This was back in the 1980’s when all of this began and only escalated in volume as the years progressed. It was aided and abetted by our nurses aides who agreed with the patients that it was the patients’ right to take what they needed-they would even give them multiple packs of diapers and formula. Our hospital police did nothing, even though they saw patients wheeling out carts with hospital linen with their suitcases. It came to the point it wasn’t worth the energy to fight it. You would not believe the disgraceful, animal behavior that happened-sex in the hospital, blow jobs, telling nurses to F_ _ _ off, etc. The patient was always right! Visitors had guns in the hospital on several occasions. One night shift the nursing staff was traumatized by two men, one with a gun who threatened staff. Our emergency buzzer didn’t work because someone failed to reset it. It took at least 3 years before administration would listen to staff’s pleas for better security.
