Boycott Petco! The company is starting to charge 10 cents for every plastic bag used by the store.
posted 3 years ago by Jscholl17 3 years ago by Jscholl17 +30 / -0

This is what my brother reported to me after he visited Petco this afternoon. Apparently the reason for this is to reduce carbon emissions. If you have pets, shop elsewhere.

Who gives a shit? Use a re-useable bag....... We as a society need to stop being gluttonous consumers......the trash we make is astounding....for convenience? We abuse and fuck this planet. Use a hemp bag bro :D. It's a small step in the right direction.

Or just keep consuming....and go to petsmart instead

You can buy hemp bags specifically for dog shit....that bio degrade. https://www.amazon.com/Doggy-Good-Biodegradable-Vegetable-Based-Environment/dp/B01LXVVH1I

They have PLA in them which is just as bad as plastic because it is not biodegradable. Only compostable in a high heat industrial incinerator. This can be confirmed by searching the printed certificate number on the certification body's online database which leads to a Chinese company and details on what is used. Also, NO Amazon!

I'm old enough to remember the war on paper bags

Paper bags were destroying the rainforest, or so we were told. Plastic bags were the way to go. And nearly every grocery store and retailer started exclusively using plastic bags. A few decades later, plastic bags are evil now.

Ironically paper bags should be considered to be better for the environment. We can responsibly grow trees, and any paper bags that turn into litter will decompose faster than plastic.

Then there are hemp bags..... Hemp was once a major export for the US. Hemp rope, hemp products were widespread. My grandfather grew hemp. Growing hemp replenishes and is good for the soil. Hemp in many ways is superior to wood pulp based products like paper.

Hemp can also be made intzo diesel, and plastics.....and the constitution is written on hemp......Makes some of the best papers.

But still federally illegal......

In New Jersey there is a ban on all plastic shopping bags (the old thin ones). So everyone has to buy there own carry bags. However, what happened was that the former plastic shopping bags could be recycled (put in your recycle bin) but the carry bags (also made of various sturdier type bags cannot be recycled. It's a big stink in the state right now.

I use plastic bags to empty my cat litter box. What else would you suggest?

I'm in the same boat in WA state. I've become pretty resourceful in finding alternatives for cat poop collection. They don't charge for those filmy plastic bags you buy produce in so we've been buying more produce. Bread bags and the bags carrots come in (5 lb. size) work too. Plus my sister from a "free" state sent me a boatload of plastic bags as padding in a package she sent me.

Here in Northern Virginia most of the food stores do the same. It's actually better to bring your own bags. You don't have to worry about them being cheap and you can load three or four times as much into each bag.

I use plastic bags to dispose of cat litter. Shall I start using paper bags for that?

in canada trudeau banned plastic bags, plastic straws and plastic cutlery.

I dont mind the bags so much but fuck paper straws, I loaded up on like 7000 plastic paper wrapped straws before the ban. And screw wood sporks, I have a load of plastic cuttlery also.

A paper straw in a plastic Big Gulp and people think they're saving the environment... it boggles the mind.

I know right. The same idiots believe in "safe and effective" and the climate scam. If I were to run out of plastic straws or cutlery I would just order from the states or buy it when I travel there. I tend not to litter, but i do take the paper straws and drop them on the ground wherever, then pull out a plastic straw. To be honest since they did this I feel like I just want to stare throwing my garbage out the car window, but I cant bring myself to do that lol.

Until India, China, and celebrities flying their PJs stop their polluting, I say you're free to do whatever you'd like! And to those who complain about your paper straws on the ground, "what's wrong baby, it's biodegradable right?" LOL.

Might not be a Petco business decision and rather the state your brother lives in passed a law requiring it

California did it almost a decade ago.

We live in North Dakota. There is no law requiring 10 cent collections for plastic.

I was going to ask if it is the state. I know in Oregon every store charges you for bags. It's mandatory

Fucking shithole that it’s become.

Now people will buy plastic bags to use for trash. There isn’t a plastic bag litter problem.

And Colorado is so far from the ocean it’s not an issue.

A cashier once told me she hates people who bring their own bags. Especially if they put them on the belt or expected her to touch/load them. A lot of them were dirty and disgusting. The other reason she said was because some people would pack groceries in them and not fully unload them from the cart, but make it seem like they did, but really, they're trying to steal stuff. I don't know.

I know I reuse all my bags. I also know it ticks me off to the point where they lose my business if I have to buy a bag.

"Reducing carbon emissions" is BS, but reducing the staggering number of wasted plastic bags accumulating in the environment is not a bad idea. Also, plastic bags aren't free; the store has to pay for them. I certainly wouldn't boycott any business for charging (even a high-margin price like 10 cents / bag) for plastic bags.

Where’s the bag fees go?

It’s simply another tax that so many simply accept without question.

So if I need 5 bags for items at cashier I would just say, sorry put this back, that back, these back. Since I can only buy what I can hold in my arms, guess I cant spend as much money here as I thought.

Just boycotting they dont know so wont miss you but if your putting back items because of the policy they notice as well as managers and other shoppers in line.
