The reason they are offering it as a rebate is so they can record a "sale" of their product. It's cheaper to give it away or offer huge rebates than it is to buy back their product.

About 30 years ago when I was in Turkey in the USAF I used to smoke. We had tobacco and alcohol rations to keep black marketing down (thanks Turkey...). I used to buy 3 cartons of Lucky Strike Lights at $2.00 a carton, cash in the $2.50 off coupon on the carton itself, get paid a buck 50, and go to the club downtown. That club cost either $5 to get in, or a pack of American cigarettes. Those were the days.

I think you’re on to something. Lately I’ve been seeing more empty Bud cans when I’m out and about. Like in a parking lot I’ll See strewn cans. It’s gotta be thieves bolting out of places with the easy to grab 18 packs by the front doors.
