And apparently Prince tried to micromanage her career and turn her into his acolyte/protege. She got into a fist fight with him, if I remember correctly… She was definitely ahead of the masses when it came to calling out child abuse in the Catholic Church
There were enough rumors at the time for some of us to think that she was probably right, but most people were unaware and the world wasn't ready for her display.
Wish we all knew more about her background and why she exited the mainstream scene. Her story cannot be told by her anymore but hopefully others can shed some light.
Prince gave that to her. He wrote a ton of songs and some of them he thought were perfect for other people.
He wrote songs for Sinead, The Bangles, Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan, Sheia E, Sheena Easton, The Time, Celine Dion, Martika, Alicia Keys, Cyndi Lauper, Patti Labelle, Kenny Rogers, Kate Bush, and several other less-well-known artists. Some of those songs ended up being among the most famous songs those artists were known for, like Nothing Compares 2 U, or Manic Monday.
His estate is still putting out songs he wrote and recorded but kept in his giant vault in Paisley Park. There are rumors that up to 8,000 unreleased songs are in there. They could release a new song every day for the next 20 years and still not be done releasing them.
Sorry - I miss him. One of the greatest songwriters, musicians, guitarists, and vocalists of all time. If you've never watched the video from the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you are missing a treat. His solo is awesome on the guitar.
So sad that his pain and addiction was the winner. A real loss.
I’m sorry I never saw him at one of those small shows he did in Las Vegas. I heard they were tiny, like 50-100 people, and could go for hours…would’ve been unreal to happen upon one.
No problem - I listen to it every few months. The backstory on that appearance is pretty funny, and when he threw his guitar Tom Petty thought it disappeared - he never saw it come down. Quite the odd set of stars and talent on stage that night.
I was coming here to mention this movie. It's one of my favorite movies of all time and explains why so many Irish people hate Catholicism. There were hundreds of thousands of teenage girls and young women stuffed into these asylums over the years, physically and sexually abused by nuns and priests. They were slaves.
I was just a kid when Sinead O'Connor went on SNL, and I didn't really get the significance of what she did. I just knew everyone said it was bad. In retrospect, she was brave and ahead of her time.
That movie haunts me to this day. I saw it with my mother many years ago thinking it was going to be a comedy. Needless to say, I was in for a real horrifying shock.
Just awful! And all those baby skeletons found buried in various church grounds. So sick. I think they were stealing the babies from the inmates of the Magda asylums and then sacrificing them to moloch or whichever demon they worship. Maddening!
1992? I feel a little better about my ig'nance back then. I was only 25. I thought the Pope was automatically a good man & I swore off Sinead back then. If I only knew then what I know now.
May her soul be safe with The Father. The abuse people suffer at the hands of monsters who were once people who at one time suffered at the hands of monsters who were once people….. my God pleae fix it all. It’s all so broke. We are all so broke. Come Lord Jesus Christ.
As a Protestant and already knowing about yhe rampant child sexual abuse rampant in the Catholic Church, I could never figure out why her career was railroaded like that. Always liked her voice.
She was cancelled before it was a thing. She did not care, she stated herself that she did not want to be a "Pop Star", she did not want to be put in that genre, she was a musician and artist, and said that she shaved her head because they wanted to put her in heels and a miniskirt, shape who she would be, so when she shaved it all off that ended the discussion. Went on to make music as she wanted to, some protest songs, many traditional Celtic songs, even some old standards. She was abused by a mother who was mentally ill, which in turn, made her trauma from that drive her crazy. The media did not help at all. May God forgive her and take her in, she had a voice of an angel and balls of brass (for a girl).
She had only one hit single off an album in this Country. Ever. How many people do you think can even name another song she did besides "Nothing Compares 2 U"?
After that album she never had another song off an album even break the top 100 in this Country. And her followup album to her one successful one came out BEFORE that SNL skit.
I remember being disgusted. And confused. Thought she had lost it.
Not so much today
Yup. Everyone was like what the actual…???
She was ahead of the crowd when it came to being awakened. Think she sang Prince's song which highlighted her vocal talents.

She got into a fist fight with Prince? I never knew that. I could have taken that little dude.

Wow, extremely enjoyable, thanks.

She was sent to a Magdalene Asylum for 18 months where she witnessed and or was victim to abuse. I recommend the film The Magdalene Sisters. Awful!

I've met quite a few Irish with similar stories. Shocking.
One thing I would love to figure out is why me Irish are always targeted.

Welp now we know. In the meantime she had a hard life in spite of her fame. But then again many famous do

Coincidentally, Ireland just scored its first women's world cup goal at 3:33 in a shot that looked sorta suspicious.
I wonder if the two events are connected.

That was a pretty hardcore moment when that happened.
