Is there such a thing as a mom and pop grocery store?
When I was young (late 50s/early 60s) we had a corner store about the size of a small house. Half of the first floor was the store, the other half was where the owners lived.
There were these neighborhood stores around town. All gone now, replaced with quick trips, 7-11, Casey's, etc.
Some of these "convenience" stores, though national/regional chains, may be locally owned, but how do you know? And is supporting them really supporting the conglomerate above them?
Farmer's markets are great, but are only available the warm half of the year.
There aren't any farmer's markets near me but there are a bunch of little stands people set up to sell fruits and vegetables. Boy are they PROUD of their stuff. I've never seen things so expensive - they are worse than Whole Foods. I've bit the bullet a few times and tried buying from them and their stuff was mostly flavorless. Too bad - I love farmer's markets and will pay a little more for good flavorful food but I don't have that option nearby.
You do realize that in many small towns there are no more mom and pop grocery stores?
Our local mom and pop has now grown to 8 states. The owner and his partner were at Jan 6 rally but not arrested - thank God. We do shop there for vegetables and beef but the prices, holy moly!
"You do realize that in many small towns there are no more mom and pop grocery stores? "
Amen to that one. When I was a kid in the Fifties, there were two small grocery stores in our neighborhood, just up the block, plus a drug store and the barber shop where I got my hair cut. And I knew of at least six more small grocery stores in my small town. Yeah, there was a chain supermarket, but my parents only shopped there once a week, for things the small stores didn't carry.
Today? Every one of those "Mom & Pop" stores has been gone for decades.
Yep, even in a quiet bayou town in Louisiana, my maternal grandmother owned a neighborhood grocery in an old raised building. Less than 1/2 mile away was another grocery store on my paternal grandparent's street. These types of stores were scattered plus the fruit and vegetable trucks and the milk trucks that would go up and down the streets. Ooohh and the ice cream trucks and snowball stands - that was the life!
I will never understand why otherwise alert and aware conservatives have such a MASSIVE blind spot for places like Walmart and McDonalds or the Monsanto type companies producing their food.
All it takes is a few movies and TV shows mocking healthy eating as some liberal hippie nonsense and half of our side got trained to eat chemical soup every day and think they're owning the libs.
Building the parallel economy is so much more than avoiding box stores. You have to step away from everything mainstream. The right doesn’t hav everything down yet. They need to embrace cooking their own food and cannabis as medicine.
I believe the 'Whac-A-Mole' method is best for concentrating forces for boycott. In other words, 'one at a time'. Target is #1 on the wanted list. Just as Bud Light is being destroyed in the beer market, Target will receive the same in the big Box top retail business. Once they are driven into bankruptcy, then move on to the next. groomer business.
this.
also, we are teaching the masses that they have this power. we must continue to focus our efforts so that they can see it working. this will encourage them to continue.
it's the same reason all vacuums seem to have a clear dirt reservoir now. people need instant gratification in this tldr society, and while we may complain that "is wrong", it is the battlefield on which we fight.
BUT...The reality is, most of these mom and pop stores have been wiped out, because:
Obongo - You didn't build that (the hell we didn't)
Obongo care $$$$$$
2008 phinancial phuckery
2016 phinancial phuckery
C19 = Death blow
Unfair competition from multiple big box stores
Furthermore, It takes a severely disciplined "upright citizen" to have the patience to wait, when the little store doesn't have what you want right then and there, and they tell you, "I can order it". How many actually order it there vs how many go to a big box and purchase outright or hit Amazon and order while walking to the car in the parking lot?
Sounds real neat in conversation about doing the right thing, but the truth is, human nature has other ideas... and that's what small businesses have to contend with right now...not to mention people who don't produce anything demanding top quality, low prices, 24/7 support, a lifetime warranty and a reach around.
Oh, BTW phuck your dollar stores and everything in them.
Something I've often thought about that I feel is under-discussed is this very topic. The retail landscape of the past 20 years has decimated not only Mom and Pop sundries stores but, also very importantly, competition to between large retailers. As someone who often has to buy specialty medical and electronics the option of "buying local" is often non-existent.
I believe the goal of the WEF and ESG is to actually crush any real competition remaining in the markets, centralize all avenues of purchase to one of two providers (as in the insurance markets), then institute social credit to make life unlivable for us dissenters.
Boycotts are good, but keep your head on a swivel.
We live in a small town so we have not shopped either in a while even before covid but I see the celebration of bringing down one so often but the other gets stronger.
Where are you getting this idea that Walmart is hurting?
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Aug 17, 2023 – Walmart Inc.
(NYSE: WMT) announces second quarter results,
including strong revenue and operating income
growth of 5.7% and 6.7%, respectively.
For a long time, Walmart seemed like the unstoppable juggernaut of the retail world, but things haven't been looking so great for the retail giant. In fact, they just announced another round of closures. So what's going on with Walmart, and will it get better or worse?
I may have overstated it a bit but the competition from online retailers is real causing Walmart to shut down hundreds of underperforming stores. Amazon is a real threat and the retail deserts in big cities created by absurd Dem policies doesnt help. If the people were to boycott Walmart they wouldnt be able to hide the bottom line through creative accounting any longer.
These store closings go back to 2016 at least but have accelerated since 2019. The retail market is in flux and of course Walmart may figure out new strategies to compete. Most retailers have already begun the online retail and delivery but competing with Amazon in this market at this point is a tough row to hoe.
Walmart cant compete with Amazons infrastructure as of yet. To put this in perspective it took my Mom 6 weeks to get 4 cans of corn delivered from Walmart.
One thing to keep in mind is that it took decades for Sears and KMart to go under. Sears was at one time the undisputed champ of retail similar to Walmart. Shifting markets can decimate retailers who arent agile enough to keep up.
Some little towns have a dollar store that's a local franchise. Most tourist towns have mom and pop art galleries, or restaurants, or flower shops. In my neighborhood there are mom and pop llanteras, a birria stand, a carniceria that I went in once, a guy who goes around in a golf cart selling crunchy snacks. And anyone selling more useful stuff got it from Walmart.

Can't afford it. Not gonna take food off of my family's table to try and "stick it to the man". Everything else is already unaffordable.
Don't limit yourself. If you live in Florida like your nom de plume suggests, you may have many options, including a good climate to grow food.

Yes...Yes they should.

I do not buy from that evil man Jeff Bozos. I really really don’t like him.
We have a mom n pop grocery store. Unfortunately most items are double in price. So survival suggests we avoid them. It is what it is.
Replying only to the title here - yes.

yes. if they can. we don't shop at either. For a long time now.
We live in a small town so we have not shopped either in a while even before covid but I see the celebration of bringing down one so often but the other gets stronger.
Walmart is already hurting, closing down many stores since 2019. A good boycott could hit them hard.
But the real danger is Amazon. People like having their shit delivered to them. I have neighbors that get something every single day.
I was hoping Game Stop or Mike Lindell would begin building infrastructure to take down Amazon.

No mom and pops left hardly to support. It’s sad
I don’t go target or Walmart. Thanks be to God.
There are no mom and pop stores. I’m just trying to buy toothpaste without seeing trannie garbage.
