Last January when Latvia's gas agreement with Russia expired, poor folks were ripping up rural bus bench seats (the planks) for easy firewood.
Luckily, our island is covered with olive trees. We have plenty of firewood and wood stoves haven't been banned (yet).

Well said. I was ignorant, albeit innocent, politically till my early 20‘s. And even then, it was slow. I‘ve made up for it from my 30‘s on. :-)

I wonder why Saudi Arabia is buying fuel from Russia.
It allows them to sell more to Europe etc. from their own supplies. It is a way of getting Russian oil to other markets in spite of the sanctions. The Saudis charge a premium and the oil flows to whoever will pay.
"tight global fuel markets" I think is the key - between this and OPEC cutting productions, get ready for $5 gasoline again, possibly higher. Inflation is headed back up for election year.
Even more inflation if the war spreads to Europe etc. It is a good strategic move to start keeping more of the refined fuel at home to prepare for disruptions. That's why we have the strategic oil reserve - or at least we used to before Biden sold most of it off.
Not to mention Putin offered Modi oil at appx half price if they paid in rubles. Of course, Modi accepted and did not join the sanction band-wagon as a result.

Right a dollar gets 96.10 Russian Rubles. This up from 60 a year ago. Exporting oil for foreign currency is very attractive right now.
The shortages are said to be particularly acute and rushes agricultural South supporting is doing this to stabilize his own country

He's probably cutting off diesel supplies to Ukraine and its allies so they cannot use Russian oil to invade Russia. Next Putin might hit some oil refineries in Europe and make it look like an industrial accident. No diesel, no invasion. No oil and Europe's war machine grinds to a halt. But it also opens Putins oil refineries to come under attack. Will be an interesting winter, especially seeing how the Ukrainians will keep themselves warm.
