Look at their speech laws. They go after pastors if they read about homosexuality in the Bible. They would always be whining about our Constitution. Actually, it's the same old story. Give people something they think is free, and they all want their fair share of it. Make it easy to go on welfare, and some people are happy to collect until the time runs out on and they are forced to work until they are eligible again (I had a coworker in the great white north who did that). It's not much different here if you're an illegal invader.
In some places the economy sucks, but the fishing is great, so rather than move to where the jobs are, they stay and collect as long as they can. I can't say I blame them for that.

Last I checked I think there is a larger % of Americans on various social assistance programs than up here. It requires a certain amount of time working before one can qualify as we pay into the fund through deductions from salary. You must apply within one week of your last day of work and benefits last less than a year at around 50% of your last pay rate. So not something to rely on long term. if you work for the govt., in a union, your contract could very likely allow you to be on a disability for a year, come back to work for one day then be qualified for another year of disability. I get confused by the "commie canada" comments I always see on here. We aren't like that at all. Until Justin at least and I don't believe our elections are any more legit than yours. I'm not going to assume things haven't changed from 30 years ago. Things in the States have degraded a lot in that time. There are plenty of lifers on welfare in the States. I don't know how that works, but the people who do are generational welfare recipients.

One guy had only been with the company a few months, and had spent something like the previous 18 months living in a cabin in the Georgian Bay area, drinking, fishing, and chasing girls (he had the beer gut to prove the drinking part). I seem to recall he had a mix of unemployment and welfare.
Me, being who I am, asked a lot of questions. I was surprised at how easy it was for some people to game the system. I don't recall all the details anymore.

It would be tough though, because Canada has roughly the equivalent population of California and New Mexico. Two of their provinces have roughly the populations of Milwaukee and Orlando. The 3 territories combined are about the population size of Cambridge Massachusetts (just over 118k people). Should they even be states - with 2 senators and a rep each? If you gave each province and territory statehood that would be 26 more senators and at least 35-50 more reps.
That would change our political landscape forever, and that's not even taking into account DC, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana islands, and the US Virgin Islands - should they want in on the action as well. That would be 12 more senators, and probably around 15 more reps.
Besides - think of all the money that would be spent shortening all of the football fields. kek
Realistically we need to shore up our hemisphere. Central and South America are predominantly Christian, catholica, and would benefit from a stable government and the civil rights we enjoy. Canada is 99% empty resource rich space, our siberia essentially. UNSWHA. United northern, southern, western hemispheres of America.
