Growing up in a Catholic home and school, the brainwashing is fairly mentally abusive. You're going to hell unless you partake in all of these kinds of ritualistic things. Don't confess your sins to a pedophile... going straight to hell. Have premarital sex... straight to hell. Miss a holy day or Sunday mass... straight to hell. Imagine growing up believing all this from a very young, impressionable age. It wasn't until my 20s that it started to fade with more emotional and intellectual intelligence. And being a victim of a pedophile priest, being sent back time after time, you wind up up a pretty unstable person even so. It's been a lifetime of guilt, shame, drug abuse and sitting in front of counselors who really don't know how to help. In the 70s when all this was going on, you didn't accuse the church, the church was sacred. It's a pretty good scam they have going on.
I'm sorry to hear what you went through - that's horrific! I hope that you haven't given up on God. I was baptized as a baby, but my mom was excommunicated for using birth control - by the same church that owned Serono, a pharmaceutical company that manufactured contraceptive pills. I think the building of the pope's audience "serpent" Hall should have been a massive red flag to everyone!
I think they would call me a grocery store Catholic. I practice the good parts, the idiotic stuff, not so much. I asked the teacher one time "if God is the only person that forgive sins, why do I confess through a man" I belive confession has been skwed to actually telling a man your individual sins. After a while I went in and said, I've sinned, that's it. That's all they needed to know. I would say I'm a Christian, but not so much a Catholic. I remember the cognitive dissonance taking place in my head when they would sell raffle tickets in the foyer of my church. But Jesus overturned the tables when he saw gambling. Oh, it raises money for the Church, therefore it doesn't count. 😅
I grew up Catholic, attended Catholic elementary school, Mass every Sunday, confession on Saturday, all the things that were sins for which I repented daily. Then my parents got divorced, and were of course excommunicated, and on their way to hell.
I noped out of all of it as a young teenager. My faith today is strong, as is my love for our Savior. When I was eight a Bishop visited our school, and we all lined up to kiss his ring. My only thought standing on that long line, was that this was not a holy thing.
I know the feeling, wasn't a priest, but... I didn't grow up in the Catholic church, I lived close to a huge one. They are very effective hunters and prey on the most vulnerable. Rest well in the fires of Hell, Ken LeClair...
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Peter started the Catholic Church at the direction of Jesus, asshole!
Peter was not a pope. He was a disciple and those Words of Jesus were stating that the Church was to be built upon the Rock Jesus Christ, not upon Peter. The Catholic Church came about years later and was not authorized by Jesus. The church referenced here are those who have trusted in Jesus as their personal Saviour.
Thank you for adding context. This is exactly what most Catholics miss the most. They fail to deep dive scriptures and would rather take what they've heard and use that for truth. Catholics have always butchered this scripture. I'm not sure it could be taken more out of context.
I'm with you, doug. I don't care for being called a member of a cult. But, I guess that makes Jesus the cult leader. And preaches love and forgiveness and to live your life according to Jesus's teachings. I haven't seen any secret rituals in church. It is best shared in families. I turned away from it as I entered adult life but returned as I had kids of my own to raise. They didn't ostracize me for leaving and welcomed me back with open arms. Not much of a cult. Peter was the first pope, chosen by Jesus to be the leader of the church on earth. And the apostles were given the holy spirit to preach His message and grow His flock. Pretty simple. Can there be bad popes? Sure. They are the same imperfect sinful humans as us.
Peter was not the first pope. The Bible says nothing like that. You are repeating what you have been taught through catholicism. Peter was a disciple who followed Jesus' teachings, and according to the Scriptures, Peter was married. Why would a church be built on a mere man. It is built upon the Rock Jesus Christ who was and is and always will be the Only Begotten Son of the Holy God. The foundation for our faith is built upon the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Don't tell me what I think or why I think it. I don't repeat shit. I have my own mind and my own eyes. I read the Bible on my own to know what it says to me.
Where in the Bible did you read Peter was the first pope? The word pope is not in the Bible. I wasn't trying to offend you, but that is something that is specifically taught by the catholic church. Where did you learn that from reading the Scriptures? It is better to put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ than in a man or a religion. Thats all I am trying to say. "Great peace have they that love Thy law, and nothing shall offend them."
Jesus said, "And I tell you that you are Peter,[a] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[b] will not overcome it." Peter is Greek for Rock. It is the founding of God's church on earth. The word the title, 'pope' didn't come till long after. The word means 'father' in Greek. It wasn't the title that was given by Jesus. Just the position of leadership to lead His flock on earth.
Just the position of leadership to lead His flock on earth.
Cool. Then what? What happens when Peter dies? Did Jesus say a bunch of men in red will get to pick another person and can give that man the same authority? I can't seem to find that anywhere. Not everyone that succeeded Peter was a good man and worthy either. Jesus also said "church" - not religion. Church - as in a building or a house of worship.
By the way - I don't care which religion anyone chooses. What's important is that they are worshiping. I don't think any organized religion is "the one true religion" anyway. God didn't make every country/continent the same, with the same weather, the same food, the same language, or even the same races. It is normal that many different religions developed all over the world. God knows all. I don't believe he would plan out a world with humans, knowing they would develop differently as they were geographically separated for a LONG time, and then expect them to somehow all converge and agree on one religion. He expected them to worship him.
The biggest thing that bothers me about Catholicism is that Catholics tend to say exactly what you did. Jesus didn't say anything about building a religion and how to run it, or anything about the traditions. He put one mortal man (that will by definition die) in charge of continuing on with his ministry. I'm behind that 100%. The stuff that it morphed into over the centuries was added by men based on what they wanted.
I was raised in the Assemblies of God as a small child (that was pretty scary for a toddler when someone started speaking in tongues), and later ended up in a Methodist church as a pre-teen and teen. My Military Dog Tags say Methodist. I stayed with that for a long time until they started changing and becoming woke. My old church now has 2 women pastors and does LGBTQ stuff. The Methodist denomination split in 2 factions. I guess I'm the third. My wife keeps trying to get me to go to non-denominational services at her church. I go every once in a while (went on Easter) but I can't take it for long. I can't even enter a Rainforest Cafe for the same reason. The "modern Christian music" is not what I want and ends up giving me anxiety attacks with the sound volume, the thumping of the speakers, and repeating the same verses over and over. It's sad too, because I really like the minister and his sermons. I do like that they wear whatever they want, and most men are wearing baseball or cowboy hats. I left last Sunday after the sermon - before they started up with the band and the next 15 minutes of music. I'll probably just start watching the sermon on their website from now on.
All religions have been changed over the centuries, and created their own traditions, practices, and dogma/doctrine. Nobody alive today would even know if any of it came from the original founding of those religions. Example - when did the Catholics start sending white smoke signals when a new Pope is chosen? We all have to take the word of the religious doctrine passed down by mere mortals who could've put in or left out whatever they wanted to. Even the Bible has been translated so many times it can look completely different (with different meaning) depending on how words or passages were translated. People said the King James version was "too difficult to understand". Now if you compare verses between the KJV and NIV some passages can have completely different meanings because of the use of "easier" words.
Sorry for the long rant. It is not against you personally. My uncle was an Assemblies minister, a dean of a bible college, a Dr of Theology, and a published religious author (he died of MS about a decade ago). We used to talk about stuff like this, and he is where I got my curiosity and interest in the different religions. I still miss that.
I was sure that would be the Scripture you would cite, but in no way in name or position does that make Peter the first pope. As one of the twelve disciples, Peter was to help the new church as established in the Book of Acts to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Who came to seek and to save lost sinners. We are saved through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by works of baptism or church membership or keeping of rituals. We never needed a pope to interpret the Scriptures for us. We have needed local church pastors to lead the flock and teach the Scriptures as written. There are specific verses that teach the qualifications and duties of the local pastors.
I am a Christian but not catholic. As an outsider to the catholics, I don't see how they use a few bible verses to snow ball into what they have going on. I think people believe in catholicism because of some kind of appeal to authority. It's so old and established over a long period so they must be right - kind of thing. For me this has no bearing on it being accurate or ordained by god.
It's pretty sad that the Catholic Catechism is thicker than the Bible itself. I guess they overlooked John 3:16. How many pages do you need to say this?
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money!" - George Carlin
In addition to the fire & smoke, you left out that bit about having to rub, soothe & sniff Rosie O’Donnell’s corns, bunions & Planters warts in perpetuity. 😒
People have been returning to churches lately so more people are taking their being saved VERY seriously.
I think they are taking it as mocking the Lord. I think Carlin was poking fun at the business of religion vs prayer and fellowship. There are, unfortunately, a lot of churches that are a business first instead of a place of corporate (as a body, not as a "corporation") prayer, praise, Bible study, and fellowship. If a church is more interested in what's in your wallet than what's in your heart, run away!
Very true. I do think Carlin may have had some religious feelings deep down though. He did a pretty good job in the movie Dogma.
It was just a movie and wasn't anything historic, but it was an interesting movie if you (like I was) are looking at different religions and traditions. Most of it was bunk but it had some dogma and doctrine throughout, sprinkled in between the comedy. I wouldn't recommend it for someone that is very religious to the point they would be upset by some of the stuff in the movie, but knowing they took "liberties" with theology going in helps.
It's not "The Passion of the Christ" - but it is funny. I particularly liked the part when Loki went after a big movie studio with a cow mascot (instead of - say - a mouse...).
I attend a Baptist church but listen to 5 or 6 ministers on youtube. They all have different perspectives. One is into gematria for the Bible and he even had Ashton Forbes on as a guest. Another says the Israelis are not Israelites (which I agree with but don't dare utter that at church.) Another says it's OK to "make noises with your mouth" (in other words swear but don't use the Lord's name). I stay clear of those mega church guys. Truth Tide had a good video on the mega church pastors. Absolutely shameful! Carlin was definitely talking about those guys!
The demographics focus my attention on the Catholic church.
As of the latest estimates, the global Catholic population is significantly larger than the Orthodox population. Catholics make up about 50% of the global Christian population, while Orthodox Christians comprise around 12% of Christians worldwide.
The ceremony sees Orthodox clergy enter the Edicule in the Church, which supposedly houses the tomb from which Jesus resurrected, with unlit candles and exit the chapel with the candles aflame with the Holy Fire. Believers claim that the Holy Fire’s ignition occurs miraculously within the Edicule...
Their followers are some of the most gullible people on earth..
They kiss icons, the chalice, and even the edge of the priest's vestment as a sign of reverence and veneration. They stand for up to 2-4 hours during church services, as sitting is seen as a form of rest that should be avoided during worship. Additionally, there are specific rules about how to interact with icons, which are seen as "windows to the world of God" and must be revered and respected. And let's not even get started on "toll booths"
Kek. Well, please keep in mind that my hatred is not for the people themselves, but for the satanic, manmade dogmas and unbiblical structures. I know there are genuine believers in Christ within both of these cults.

The older I get the more I see that almost all of these religious institutions are for mere control, ritualistic abuse, and theft of souls.
We’re not called recovering Catholics for nothin’…

where is the word "pope" in the Bible?
All over the place. Pope means papa.

Catholics are taught that they are the true church, same as Mormons, in my opinion the true church lives and dwells in us when we accept Christ.
Listen to Amy Grant's Better than a Hallelujah, sums up what God wants.
