Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is showing a recovery of what one source described as "nothing short of a miracle" after being hospitalized last weekend.
Giuliani, 81, had severe respiratory distress, which doctors later diagnosed as a life-threatening medical emergency caused by double pneumonia.
He has now been moved out of the intensive care unit.
"It was touch and go," the source said of this past weekend. "But his recovery over the last several days has been remarkable."
News of Giuliani's improving health has sparked relief among longtime friends and political allies, many of whom had been monitoring updates closely since word spread of his hospitalization.
Despite the ordeal, the famously combative former prosecutor is already said to be focused on returning to public life — and particularly to defending President Donald Trump in the media.
"Rudy is anxious to get back on the media circuit," the source said. "He wants to be out there fighting for President Trump as soon as doctors allow it."
Giuliani has remained one of Trump's most loyal and outspoken allies throughout years of political battles and legal controversies.
After news broke of his illness, Trump posted to Truth Social, "Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition."
The friendship between the two New Yorkers stretches back decades, long before Trump entered politics.
The pair first became closely associated during Giuliani's tenure as mayor of New York City in the 1990s, when Trump was one of the city's most prominent real estate developers and public figures.
Their alliance only deepened after Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, when Giuliani emerged as one of the first major political figures to endorse the billionaire.
After that, he became one of Trump's fiercest defenders on television and on the campaign trail.

Rudy is a bit of an enigma to me.
He couldn't possibly not have been privy to at least some level of inside information with 9/11. Information he has obviously kept to himself.
But he's also been a passionate, unwavering supporter of the President (a man directly opposed to the forces that resulted in the 9/11 attacks), unlike puppets like Tucker Carlson. So I can't help but like Rudy.
I got news for you Jackie. IDK about 911 but Rudy must have also known about election machine rigging since the 90's. I have a friend who is a computer expert & he was part of the team that made a very early version of the voting machines for NYC in the 90's. He was part of the team so he went down when they delivered them to the NYC staff. They showed the New York city election staff how to use the machines & after that they showed them the several back doors in which you can alter the vote (ie cheat) A little confused, the NYC team questioned them asking: "You can change the vote?" My friends team assured them that they could, in several different ways. To which the New York city staff replied: "If the vote can be altered we can't use them" and they refused the shipment.
This was back when Rudy was mayor. You can bet that news made it's way to the top. Now, what is Rudy doing? He's putting everything he got & is willing to sacrifice his amazing legacy to prove in court that which he has known for the last 30 years to, in fact, be true. God bless the man!
