There is a special ID that each MS OS install is given that any LEO agency can track, as long as they have access to Microsoft's internal database. Apparently, this is something that most cubersecurity techs aren't even taught in school, and it's not something explained to them once they have a job unless they are involved in an investigation, i.e. being the tech responsible for gathering any info for the LEOs.
It's how the LEOs are tracking and apprehending modern hackers.

There was a hacking group recently nabbed in the EU as a result of this underlying MS ID that almost no one knows about. Only Microsoft has access to this secret ID number as it is an internal thing they track. I can't remember the guy's Insta name or the article he read it from and I didnt save the post.
How the world's govts found out about this is anyone's guess.
