The history taught in our classrooms today is appalling from elementary school through college. My biggest pet leave is the causes of the Civil War. During my parents/grandparents time, they were taught that the PRIMARY issue in the Civil War was about unfair taxes/tariffs being imposed on the South and the money being disproportionately spent on Northern interests. In the 1960’s during the Civil Rights movement, the narrative was changed in academia. They started teaching that the Civil War’s primary issue was slavery. Slavery was a reason, but it was way further down on the list. Although the Civil Rights movement was a great cause, this misrepresentation of history gave Southerners a black eye.
