People spend tons and tons of money on something just to feel different for the day/night. But once the next day comes around, reality strikes back and we are left feeling crappy, aka a hangover. Even worse, society pushes through advertising on how "great" it is through luxurious marketing. When really, there is nothing about it that makes it awesome. This is only my honest opinion on this commodity. I respect everyone's opinion as each individual is different in their own unique way. It was always something I thought recently after being awakened to the world at large.
If this seems like a doomer post, I offer my sincere apologies as that was never my intention!
I personally drink it because it tastes good in my coffee:) I also buy scratch offs just for the fun of it. I see no sin in enjoying the life we were given, as long as we are not hurting ourselves or others in the process. Moderation is the key.
LOL, it taste good in your coffee!! So you're saying you pretty much drink from dusk till dawn right?
You can make this argument about anything. "Oh this guy waitied in line for 3 hours just to ride the rollaer coaster" You can consider that a waste of time but was it really? No because it wasn't your time. It was theirs
Qlso if you drink responsibly you wont get hangovers. I was drinking last night and i feel fine right now this morning.
it's all about perspective
Oh yeah it's definitely about perspective! I understand that. If people consume it responsibly, then there's nothing wrong. It's more so when there is no comprehension of that responsibility and they go all over the place. That's when it gets dangerous.
I think there may be more to your comment regarding how enthusiastically alcohol is pushed on us via marketing, lobbying, social norms and the culture revolving around it. Something about that never sat right with me and I enjoy a drink every now and then but I do not like even being buzzed.
It's also very interesting to watch what is going on with the legalization of cannabis across the country and what its relationship looks like from the above angles when compared to alcohol.
It's also important to know the history of the plant and why it carries the reputation it does today: https://cannabislifenetwork.com/breaking-cannabis-stigma/
Not to derail any further, but the evolving relationship between the two 'acceptable' perception-altering substances may yet reveal even more of what we suspect regarding a cabal that will provide any means we'll willingly accept to kill us en masse, even if it takes generations.
My daddy use to say, "If you could show me where taking a drink ever helped make even one thing better in someone's life, I would agree with you, that drinking is good." Drinking certainly not improved my reputation, and even now I am fighting off the urge to go get a touch of the potato.
I dance better after wine.
What's a hangover? Is that when you wake up drunk? I've had that a lot.
Most things in moderation are great, glass of wine with dinner beer with lunch. You’re right though, drink responsibly. My sister and brother can’t, some people just can’t stop at one. My sister has a problem, she passed out in a restaurant bathroom and was taken to the emergency room. My mom went to see her and she just kept saying “I only had a couple”. It’s genetic unfortunately for my family, my fathers mother and father died from alcohol poisoning.
There's always virtue in an honest opinion.
I disagree in part personally, the key is respectful use. Misuse alcohol and it'll abuse you for sure. But unlike 'drugs' drugs, its primary purpose is social and even health beneficial to a moderate degree.
Where are you? I'm in the UK and we don't go for the advertising/promotion side of it much here.
I'm in the US, so there's a lot of promotion of its consumption. I understand that it has other uses, like a disinfectant.
Lol, 99 baby here. I agree with you even though I do drink.
I drink cause it’s available and decently cheap. But if I had the option to readily choose, I’d pick grass over booze any day.
Waiting for someone to legalize it I guess. Cause rn it’s just inconvenient as fuck to buy a gram or two and can’t keep it anywhere
Me too. My brain naturally runs hot, always thinking and plotting but weed slows it down. Sometimes I need a little break.
Pretty much the same for me. Always gotta do something. Always wanna make something happen. But my brain doesn’t hold my body to that standard ??
What the fuck does this have to do with Q ?
Underrated comment of the day
I tell my wife constantly to try and beware of any foods you purchase that are from China. I would not doubt it but that they are purposely poisonings our food.
Depends, is there walnut sauce involved?
Thank you
I'm about to go scorched Earth on these mopey sad sacks.
Mods slipping
Keep a sound mind at the ready for when the plan strikes in the next 40 years?
Call me weird, but I like a cold beer with a nice burger and fries.
I prefer RC. BUT, a hard seltzer afterwards...
To each his own.. Now what is it with you guys and avocado toast?!?
Avocado is the new code for pizza. See Miley Cyrus' tattoo.
I always thought it was weird that this avocado fad came out of nowhere
marijuana > alcohol
You have a point. Although I have the same problem with my homemade Lemon Merengue Pie. People rave about it...I feel like we are borrowing happiness from it, that is only gone when the plate is empty.
Alcohol causes one to be PRESENT, aka "buzz", which temporarily dampens one's awareness of time (past/future) and the voice of fear/doubt/worry/guilt/etc.
The state of PRESENCE is our natural state, when the "monkey-mind" is silenced. In this state, happiness/joy/peace/ease arises.
Said state arises naturally when we simply stop trying to do anything and relax into the "now moment".
Alcohol artificially brings the same during that brief window of "peak buzz". It's a poor substitute in the long run, but for those unaware of allowing this state to arise naturally, it's a welcome retreat from that incessant voice in the head (aka "satan") regularly reminding us of all our past failures and future worries.
You can substitute the words "Meditation", "Zen", "Communion", "Witnessing" for "Presence". All are one and the same concept pointing to our natural state of awareness. It's literally the act of "Non-doing", akin to "falling asleep", something that simply happens in the absence of "trying".
I'm of the millennial generation. I started drinking at 14 and drank a LOT in high school. Got into some other drugs (never the heavy heavy stuff). I was always worried I would become an alcoholic but over and over, I found I just didn't like alcohol. I had horrible experiences with it. But I kept doing it to party and hang out with people. But I would make terrible decisions that I would regret the next day. I'd wake up with a hangover. And I got so disgustingly sick, World Spinning, so many times. And then I'd want to do things like play ping-pong, play Halo 3 (lol), play a game of chess, or things like that, and we would drink and I just SUCKED at all of it. Because the loss of hand-eye coordination. Overall what I hate most about alcohol is the loss of 'control,' generally. Both physically and mentally. Calling girls at midnight trying to hook up with them and they're in bed. Trying to kiss girls outside the bar, sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't but I always felt empty about it the next day.
Last year my friend died of liver failure. Too much drinking and pills in our teens and twenties. He did a lot worse than me, more. And kept going after I stopped.
All drugs have downsides. In the end I don't really think any of them are worth it. My favorites now are nicotine and caffeine. Could never give those up. Otherwise I spend my days and nights sober.
Donald Trump doesn't drink!
I can tell your job doesn't suck as much as my job.
Sometimes a good scotch is just...so good. Live and let live
Wholeheartedly agree, we must work to find happiness and peace soberly or we are giving in to the devil. The rampant alcohol commercials and placement in shows/movies is meant to tempt us and corrupt our society. Of course moderation is alright but anything beyond that is dangerous especially if you have an addictive personality. I was never an alcoholic but I had a handful of experiences that made me go "why bother with this nonsense" and now I hardly have more than one drink a year, if that. My body loves me when I am sober and hates me if I am not.
Alcohol also ages the individual prematurely. Damages cells that come in contact with it which takes years to recover. Alcohol is also a carcinogen causing throat cancer especially in combination with tobacco. Plus all the issues with the liver, etc... and one of the most addictive drugs known to man.
From a Gen X POV
I'll have a drink or two at night after a long day because I'm a grown-ass adult well beyond those college frat party years and enjoy a good mead. You probably should have had your title be Alcohol Abuse is Such a Dangerous Waste so you don't sound like a Prohibition Crone lumping in casual responsible drinkers with the rest of Them.
I agree with this. As an alcoholic I know alcohol very well. I've tried most drugs in my lifetime. all the bad ones and I'd say booze is the worst purely because of it's availability and society encourages us to drink it.
I'm not going to preach or give warnings as you're all adults here but if you think you might be drinking too much then you probably are. It's a fucking nasty drug. And it's sneaky too. A master of stealth.
I'm 6 months sober, lost everything apart from the people I love. I've never felt better mentally and physically and life is on the up again.
Having over 19 years of sobriety, I couldn't agree more!
I’ve had three alcoholics in my life. The damage that has been done has been immeasurable. My daughters dad died from alcoholism. If I ever remarry, my rule is that the person does not even drink one drop of alcohol, except for maybe a Glass of champagne on New Year’s Eve or and occasional beverage at a fancy restaurant.
However; just because I have personally experienced a plethora of problems due to alcohol, I would not begrudge someone else drinking it. Some people can drink a glass of wine every day and not have any problems, and I guess a glass of red wine each day is supposed to be healthy for you. Good for your heart.
So if there is somebody out there that can handle their alcohol responsibly, and if it enhances their life without bringing physical harm to them, then by all means raise a glass. If it can help somebody relax at the end of the day, and you find some merriment in it amongst family members or friends, then I say party on Wayne!
If you or a family members have any addiction, or inability to quit while you’re ahead, then run for your life. Stay away from it, because it’s not worth the grief that it brings. Believe me I know. I find my happiness and the peace and quiet of the word of the Lord every day. He is my strength and my shield.
God bless everyone on this beautiful Sunday! Have a great day!
Good way to limit your selection to (former) alcoholics.
Not really. There are many people that don’t drink alcohol. I know quite a few. Not because they were alcoholics, because they choose not to. Like I said, an occasional beverage at a fancy restaurant or on New Year’s Eve, is not something I would expect a former alcoholic to do. When my husband was drinking, and I wanted him to stop, I stopped drinking. How can I expect somebody to quit drinking, if I’m drinking in front of them. The same stands, that if an occasional beverage at a special occasion, it’s OK with me. I would not be marrying a former alcoholic, to tempt them to do something that would cause them to relapse. Nor would I even marry a former alcoholic. I would not risk my future, knowing that a person could knowingly relapse. That would be the stupidest thing I could ever do. The point of my comment was, that although I have endured quite a bit of problems with people who drink alcohol, I would not begrudge others to drink it themselves. That’s all.
I drink really good beer and usually 2 or 3 a day. I don't get drunk and it has no negative impact on my mentality or health. I enjoy the taste mostly but the slight looseness it gives is nice, too. Moderation is key for anything. Beer is beautiful.
Life is too short to drink shitty beer.
Agreed
Poors a glass of a Lagavulin Distiller's Edition
You have a lot to learn, my boy.
The purpose of mortality is to learn to make Christlike decisions. That's hard enough when sober, I don't need alcohol or weed to make it harder!
Though strongly libertarian, this is something I'm not so sure about. Does a person have the right to surrender their cognitive capacity? Maybe if they're not in public, a position from which driving stunk is likely or compelling. If someone is going to be free to impair his or her decision making ability, penalties and precautions for misuse ought to be severe. Accidently hitting someone with a car when sober is one thing, but when you're drunk, anything you do unintentionally was precipitated by the intentional act of drinking.
I stopped drinking years ago. Never missed it. Weed is better and has been effective at suppressing migraines that I have struggled with for well over a decade.
I understand your opinion, but how much do people pay for experiences? I get a high every time I go the range and pound some rounds ( love the smell!) but that is an order of magnitude more expensive than drinking (especially now!). I enjoy good bourbon at home, either in my workshop or with my wife- I have ADD, and it really helps with being in the now. Rarely get drunk, but if I do its with my wife and its a good time :) I agree that as with anything, too much is destructive, but everyone should be able to make that choice on their own. Freedom has casualties, but nowhere near the casualties of communism.
It's not a doomer post, but this has nothing to do with Q.
I would agree 100%. But that is my opinion as well.
Its trash, smoke weed and do mushrooms instead
Your name has me dying. Disrespectful. Kek.
"Come and play, come and play. Forget about the movement." Hard to hold anyone in government accountable when you're focused on the next party. Just like they like it. As a former heavy drinker, I'll admit a lot of my time could have been put to better use. Glad my awakening happened when it did, thanks to some friends and people like Aaron Russo, Alex Jones, Art Bell and others. It's not just alcohol either. there's so many distractions today that take your eye off the ball. Too many shiny objects on the internet, as useful as it is
I have never consumed one drop of alcohol, or even any drugs and tobacco. There is literally nothing positive it does for me. Does it make me rich? Nope. Does it make me healthy? Nope. Is it going to make me more attractive? Nope. There is literally no reason. Total waste of time and money.
You can't say it has no effect on you if you've never tried it
2 cents from a Pede at bike week.
It offers an opportunity for people who otherwise wouldn't meet to connect, but without self control is a dangerous and damning thing.
I like your honesty and believed like you at one point.
I don't think Alcohol (or pretty much any substance) is a problem but the way we, ourselves decide to consider, respect, and employ it.
People have drank alcohol for all of history and a great many world-changing alliances formed over a shared glass and the revelry facilitated therein.
We do have a culture of abuse, one that shuns moderation and that is a problem but there's absolutely no harm in taking a substance to enhance or enable a mental state. Unless you're some ascetic: you do it with food, you do it with gifts, you do it with music, art, and poetry.
It's when you use these things to keep your mind, eyes, and hands from the work of bettering yourself and the world around you that it becomes a problem.
I was literally just talking with my children about this today. I steer them away from alcohol not just for religious beliefs but because of health. Many people can have a beer or two now and again. Wine with dinner, or whatever, but there are millions of people who have susceptibility to not being able to control it. Alcoholism runs in my family and it’s not so much that you are addicted to having to have it every day all day but it’s you can’t stop at one. Binge drinking, some people have addictive personalities too. I personally can’t stand feeling like I’m not in control of my actions, hate pain meds because I feel like I lose time.
