I read intention and manipulation all over this image. Unless some new fancy circus mirror lens came out, no lens can achieves this effect. Why would anyone intentionally want to do this to a portrait image? The premise is ridiculous.

They did a good job getting similar directions and depth of light for the general untrained eye, but if you look closely the details decry the idea the two couples were photographed together.
And your key point remains, no lenses I know work the way they say these lenses work. It’s not a simple answer if it’s contrary to reality.
