One is reminded of Cicero, who apparently saved the Roman Republic from a conspiracy, the Cataline conspiracy. He moved quickly to remove the conspirators and had them killed.
Unfortunately he moved too quickly and without a trial(important, Roman law forbade the killing of another Roman without a trial) allegations of wrongdoing followed him for most of his life thereafter.
It can be argued either way on if there was a real conspiracy or not. But nobody could ascertain the truth of the matter because the conspirators were already dead.
My point being, if Cicero allowed the conspiracy to come to light before acting, he would have spared himself and everyone some trouble.
