They know about geomagnetic storms and plan for them. So they are essentially saying "we didn't know". Um..no. This is something else.

No. Solar activity can be observed and predicted; but where and when, and the intensity of any given flare is chaotic. From the Sun to earth is a matter of a couple minutes.
More or less; the speed of light being a constant, you see it as it hits you. The satellites are “hardened” for expects cosmic radiation, but this sort of event is pretty much unpredictable and indefensible

And it takes the particles from a large flare a day or two or three. They do not move at the speed of light. If they did there would be no life on earth.
Still, by the time you see that something happened; it’s likely too late to do anything about it.
