I doubt he just strolled out of there. Most mental health facilities have protocols in place to prevent "elopement". If someone gets out, ALL the doors are locked, so whatever room you're in, you're staying there until it's over. Good for him.
I'd like to know the story, too. I am guessing that being a doctor helped him manipulate their security protocols so he could walk out. But however he did it, 81 years old and escaping- good job!

Not always that easy. During my student nurse days I did a rotation at a mental health facility. The patients lined up at the med closet, which had a split door that opened at the top. Give the med, make sure they swallow it, open mouth to show it's gone. I'm sure not every place does that, but it would be difficult to fake it in some facilities.

I've met Mel and some of the people who helped him in Alberta.
Even at 81 and committed to a mental ward, escaped, and he still speaks out.
Secondarily important is the fact if i showed this to my family they'd find a way to not give a fuck.
