As I close in on nearly 2 decades as an aviator, I can tell you with certainty that one cannot tell from the ground how high a plane is with any reliable accuracy. Pattern altitude is typically 1,000 feet AGL for most general aviation airports. In downtown austin, there are buildings that approach 1,000 ft, and I think there is one under construction that will exceed that.
You fly that low, and supersonic, and you're leaving a trail of broken shit everywhere. Shattered windows, stuff falling off walls...its not just a loud noise...

I’d say Altitude is probably wrong. If such a thing even occurred. Sonic booms in an area filled with glass plated skyscrapers. Many of which easily stretch into the 500ft reported low end of the alleged altitude should have shattered and or cracked windows at the very least on the upper floors.
And being showered with broken glass is a good way to get the general public to make a lot of angry calls to local Government and Media.
I live approx. 25 miles from downtown Austin and I heard this crazy loud sound (I was inside my home) coming from outside in the sky that lasted around 2 minutes. I ran outside and looked all over the sky and didn't see any aircraft at all, but the noise sounded airplane engine-like. I've been totally baffled by it since it happened (around 1:00pm CT).
I've talked to several other people who live around Austin since this bizarre event and they all heard it too and were kinda freaked out about it as well. A couple of my neighbors who also heard it weren't able to go outside b/c they were on conference calls at the time, but they totally heard it inside their homes too. Wish I could actually find out WTF it was.
So funny! First one when I looked - in response to the title question "Fighter jets scrambled... What's going on?" The anon replied "Someone misgendered a fat dude in a dress." 😂 Those TDW anons are a funny, spicy bunch, always find enjoyable commentary over there.
And then the ukranians have infiltrated and hijacked the aircraft. 🙄
There are military bases in TX, and they do a lot of training flights. I live relatively near to several bases in NC and hear planes occasionally, but mostly helicopters.
There are a good number of military flights in the air in that part of TX right this minute. And that doesn't include the fighter jets which don't show up. You can just infer their locations sometimes by seeing where the refueling tankers are flying.

Every time I'm near downtown Austin, Tx... I want to get out of there as quickly as possible too.

800-1100 ft is where most training chalks are dropped.
Around 1 min in you can see the plane and ground from a ground perspective.

B1 Bomber is currently in the air west of Abilene...
I do see an E6 up off the coast of Florida, with a couple of E8 Joint Stars just North ish.
Also a B1 Lancer to the West of Dallas by about 120nm.
Interestingly AF2 (757) and a SAM flight (757) is in trail with it Nr Missouri.
Can't see any special fast air apart from the usual trainers in that sort of area.
Hope that E6 goes a little south of the previous track and I can catch a glimpse
