That writer's strike 15 years ago? That was the dividing line. Shows produced before that date - normal, enjoyable, not politically correct. Shows produced after the writers "came back" from the strike? Horrible, fake and every other character on a show had to be gay. The shows and movies before and after were like day and night. You aren't wrong that as quality drops there are naturally fewer customers, but coming from someone close to the industry, streaming services are actually a huge factor. writers are often payed royalties when their shows air on network television. However with the trend of shorter seasons, there is less work to go around, and the non-transparent nature of streaming makes royalties impossible. It's become much harder to find long term writing gigs as opposed to week and month long "writers rooms", which can pay well, but do not last long enough to be sustainable.
I still believe that the reason for the drop in viewership is primarily because the content is bad, not because a new style of service came out.
With that said, even if what you're saying is truly the primary cause, I still disagree with saying it's a result of streaming services. Rather, it's a result of new pay models becoming the norm. That just happens to be correlated with streaming services. Changes often occur correlated with other changes, because it's an easy time to sneak them in. But it's important that we recognize the real cause.
The same is true for things like EVs. People vilify EVs, in part, because they can be remotely shut down and shit. I am not trying to say WWE isnt worth watching, if thats what someone likes....it's not my time spent watching. It's their lives. I can see WWE being called a sport, altho scripted there is alot of training, and strength and conditioning that goes into it, also acting training, and the high flying acrobatics training. It should be considered a true sport, because of all that athleticism needed.
