Secure Safe. Gimme a break mods. General Chat takes forever to get an answer!
Needs an answer, STAT!
Pedes, I need to buy a safe that has to be secured in concrete or something similar. Don’t need a real big one, so not a gun safe. A few pounds of “retirement” will be going into it. I’ll need to have it installed. I’m in the southeast. Can you guide me?
My thoughts about having someone install it is: someone but you knows about it now.
My thoughts about talking about this in a public forum: someone might target you.
My thoughts on how to hide gold would pretty much be to search the internet and come up with something that works for you, that you can do, and that no one will ever find out.
Just do what we did... 2 medium sized safes... 1 in a "normal" place where it's accessible (in a cupboard and can be "seen" )... 2(The important safe) you install in the floor, cemented and bolted and covered depending on what kind of floor it is with carpet/board, tiling etc....(For the good stuff 😏)
Pretty good idea—a decoy safe!
100%... If for any reason there's a burglary or home invasion etc.. They can have what's in the safe in the cupboard... 😁
Also, if you look at real old houses (as an example) they would build secret compartment, passageways, rooms for valuables, hiding in etc….. Then there are neurotic ideas like my dad had of hiding extra cash in Sucrets boxes under my Gramas house. (He had zero trust in banks)
Absolutely... 😉
17d ban.
lol j/k idk, u/Windows8866 are you anon enough for a stick on this, for discussions sake?
Imma “she” and thanks BQnita. You’re my hero here. Well, one anyway. Thanks!
How do you know? No one knows what a woman is. Haven't you been watching TV?
LOL.
Forgot to add: How dare you assume your own gender!
I don’t watch tv and I’m probably old enough to be your granny or at least your mama, so I’m pretty sure after three sons
Wait.
You're a mod? Um. I didn't know that. So, that time when I was arguing with you on an issue... I was just joking.
Well crap I just spurted my iced tea
You just never know who's gonna jump out of the cyber forest and bite you...
🐺
No apology necessary. I’m in awe of you. You’re a “take no prisoners” mod. I’ve seen you in action! Always thought it was a good idea to stay under your radar!
Love u/BQnita also.
Yeah, I got chewed in a few times when I signed my poems, devotions and paintings with my first initial and last name for doxxing
I’m anon enough. Let’s do it!
All right, another thing i can think of is... 'if you look poor, people will think you're poor'.
So don't be flashing.
Got that down pat sir! And have for decades!
Another tip. If you have a good hillside facing away from public view that cam be dug into, good for hiding things in…….
just not the freezer, it is one of the first places a thief will look. (heard it on tv)
Yes, but consider: Keep a small container with a small quantity of the items in the freezer to be found by thieves or handed over the actual robbers during an invasion. The bulk of the items remain in the REAL hiding place.
Enhanced strategy: Keep a very small amount easily accessible at the desk, then another a slightly larger amount in the freezer, with the bulk hidden in the actual hiding place.
Just get progressively larger freezers and sprinkle in decoys until you have a wall of different sized freezers and somewhere amongst them is the true treasure.
This topic has been discussed here before so as far as discussing on a public forum…I’m in agreement with you on another person would know. My options are limited fren. I don’t know what to look for regarding my situation. I’m thinking safe but I remember a conversation on here where it was stated that if someone could pick it up, they could carry it off. Therefore I’m considering securing in concrete.
I keep my shiny in a gun safe. Use redhead concrete anchors to bolt it to the floor and then run big lag screws through the back into the studs in the wall.
Secure in concrete AND make it heavy to carry as well, a hundred bucks of pennies weighs 55 Lbs... a few hundred bucks in pennies plus weight of safe and cement...
Also you can bolt some safes to the floor internally...
a decoy also a good idea...
Point #1 can be done if you can find someone you trust to do it for you. In my jurisdiction at least, you don't have to be explicitly honest for the usage of your planned modifications; you can get a permit for a certain size of wine cellar but then create a bunker with it etc.
So if you can find a company you trust to do installs on the down low, you can at least preserve the secrets where it matters: from the governments.
why not a gun safe... it will allow for this and then some
You have a good point. Thanks
Secure-It gun safes! They are affordable and light weight (for a safe). You bolt it to the floor or studs in the wall to make up for lack of weight. Big, heavy safes are literally frauds. The gauge of steel is the same for almost all of them and any can be defeated by a cheap angle grinder and 20 minutes of time. All that weight is basically dry-wall sandwiched between two 1/8 inch steel sheets. That's stupid and does nothing to add security. So why buy a 1,000 pound safe that costs thousands of dollars and requires heavy equipment and crews of dudes to install; a thief will just cut a hole in it...so much for all that weight! Just buy a steel box, bolt it to the floor and get virtually the same security for WAAAY less money - that's what Secure-It safes are Plus you can take it with you if you move.
Have you watched John Wick?
What does watching John Wick have to do with buying a safe? Not trying to be a smartass either.
If only I had a basement…..
That’s just it... you make a secret basement that no one knows about!
Wouldn't work if she lived deep south like I do - dig down 3 ft and you have water lol.
Ahh, but see, that’s just it, they’d never bother to look under a swimming pool! Kek!
Your question made me think of the scene where he digs up his safe from the floor of his basement.
Don’t forget the freezer! Buy a nice big safe. Then store the “cheddar” in the freezer. Preferably in a nice cardboard container matching other freezer memorabilia. It’s amazing how refrigerators are never stolen in a house fire, or burned on the inside. In most cases.
This is the way. No one is going to steal a box of Eggo Waffles.
Sad to say I used to be a thief. Big safes and the like are just billboards of temptation to a thief. Obviously letting no one know about it is key, but sometimes people accidentally talk. Like your child’s friend, who happen to see it, and just mentions how awesome it is. A picture in the room, like a selfie l, and oops, the edge of the safe is in the shot. All kinds of crap happens. I say get a blaze orange, white flags, and wrap a log chain around your safe…the firefighters and cops will fight to steal it when your house burns. But the freezer…nobody thinks of the freezer. Even in a house fire the frozen steaks are still intact. Now all you need is just a bit of thinking, like a ziplock bag, water proof ammo can, and a nice hamburger patty cardboard box or as you said a eggo wafffle box. Done. There are many options to amount, the size of your freezer, or what’s contained. Just needs some creative thinking.
Now to store those silver coins. You’ll need a pvc pipe, and end cap, and a water source, like a stream, pond, or water/mud hole……
Thanks for turning your former experience to a better purpose.
Fren, please consider an educational post for the rest of us to learn from, we tend to be more innocent (read: gullible) than we'd like to think. ThankQ for this and any other help you can lend. Praying for you, too.
Edit: what do you think of books with cavities in them, and inside frozen spinach or cauliflower in the freezer for small stuff?
I'd love to see the report or news stories of cops and firefighters fighting over who gets the safe.
Oh you won’t see the report. I know plenty of cops and firefighters…they are just like anyone else. Temptation is temptation. That’s why you NEVER buy those suitcase style safes. They are good for placing inside another safe however. It’s like a lock someone places on a trailer or bicycle. That’s only for the honest people. As in, a lock keeps people honest. To a thief is just 10-60 seconds of time. And time is the main obstacle to a thief. If they can take it quickly, it’s gone. If it takes more time, they’ll look for easier targets. It just depends on the items worth. I know plenty of folks who go to a job for a day or two(construction) and they lock up the hitch mount, take the tires off the trailer, and then cord it to en electrical pole. That’s how it’s done, lol. Is it unstealable? Of course not. But it sure does make it aggravating. And that’s the point.
Not so sure, with the narrative about food shortages & the high cost of food. Depends on what the home invaders are looking for.
If people are breaking into houses to steal food then the need for precious metals has passed away and the only valuable things are food, firearms, and ammo.
Gee thanks guys! Not sure, but I believe this is my first stickie! I’m honored!
Most "good quality" safes have the capability to be bolted to the floor. Verify before you buy. Definitely use it!
I don’t know, unless you had a hidden room down in the basement, if criminals saw it & wanted it bad enough, they’d torture you or family members to get it. In my opinion, you be better off; if you own land & live in a rural area, to hide & bury it in watertight container. Plant poison Ivy or giant hogweed on top or nearby as a deterrent. Or if you have an area where you bury your deceased animal companions you could bury Hi ho silver or Goldie with the others. Hiding in plain sight.
You’re a flipping genius, but alas, my small amount of land has proven not secure. My barn was completely stripped and my animal companions are buried there too. It’s in another county not too far from where I’m at now.
If your house has no basement, does it have a crawl space? Folks generally hate going under a house. Kek
No shit. It's icky under there.
Your own little slice of Australia
Especially, if you you have snake skins hanging from the floor joist. I once had a plumber refuse to go under my house because he saw some snake skins under mine.
I too had a plumber decline to crawl into the crawl space.
I just woke up and saw your reply. I now have coffee all over my shirt this morning. Thanks for making me laugh before I head out the door for work. Kek.
What a great idea to bury it like that. Rural or not. Dig the hole at night. There are certain tricks to burying something truly waterproof, too. And that container should be created on the sly, and not purchased, right??
If anyone knew I had purchased a safe and cement I would be very paranoid someone would target me.
I’ve been told a hole on your property, lined in plastic, with a 5 gallon bucket and lid, also lined inside with plastic, under something that keeps rain off, yet is semi-easily moved, yet looks messy like a wood pile or whatever…is a really great idea for storing things.
😉
This may be a dumb idea but… if you are trying to keep things safe from average burglars (as opposed to your family) you might consider hiding your stuff in plain sight. Examples are old books hollowed out with a lock box inside, on a shelf with a lot of other old books. Or an old coffee can with stuff hidden below a pile of nuts and bolts in the garage. This concept works for situations where you don’t expect a raid by the FBI or someone skilled in finding hidden safes. Also works best of your home is somewhat cluttered. I’ve also seen on Amazon fake air conditioning grills that install into a wall and look like the real thing. There are many such things to buy, or get ideas about online. If you can do carpentry, it’s not hard to add a hidden drawer behind the kick plate of a kitchen cabinet.
I've seen those fake cans of drink too be used in a fridge, but then I've seen videos where crooks grab a child one before heading out, too...
If you live somewhere where flooding is a possibility.. I'd have to recommend against this. Safes can get flooded and mechanisms can rust.
I knew a homeowner that had one once. Thought she had 10s of thousands in there. It "broke" a few years back, but since she didn't need the money right then, she waited to get someone in to extract it and open it.
We did. It was empty.
Her boyfriend of several years back found the combination, opened it, emptied it, then superglued the mechanism to make it appear broken.
Ground safes, in my opinion, are a terrible idea.
Also.. don't put all your stuff in one place. Sometimes the least secure places end up being the best places.
Get something big, don't buy cheap, get something that is fire rated, insulated.
You will run out of room real quick if you go small.
There will be holes in the bottom and back of the safe to secure the safe to the floor and wall. Use some small lag bolts. Make sure you hit a wall stud with the lag bolt.
If its a few pounds, find a fire-resistant document safe. They can have an hour fire rating and you want it to be waterproof(when there is a fire.... there will be a ton of water) you can put it in an attic and finish over it. Id recommend putting it over a closet or some area small. This will be least likely and area that firefighters will pull ceiling in the event of a fire. But it also affords you an area within the house you can pull the ceilibg to access it, without having to get in the attic to retrieve it.
Look up ammo cabinets. Usually smaller than gun safes and very secure. They have mounting points and shelves. I recommend one that has key only as the battery pin pads could go bad.
Freezer idea is great buy a gallon of ice cream cut out most of the ice cream place a smaller tupper wear container with what you are hiding. Repack ice cream around the smaller container. Replace in the freezer.
Possibly buy a safe, weld (or hire a welder) to put some rebar on it bent into varying directions (even a grid) a 1-3" away from the edges. Pour concrete around all the edges & let it cure.
That said, I am not certain of anyone in that area that does this type of thing. Like below should help you figure out what direction you want to go.
This guy suggests using concrete epoxy with a threaded rod (clean out all the dust really well first) https://youtu.be/1R-0UKLXnJ4
One guy hides his safe under the floor in a creative way. https://youtu.be/Cd0Bkju0eWs
This Locksmith tells us that an in ground safe is susceptible to destroying your foundation (home age dependent) or flooding, so if you are going the in found route, protect stuff with water proof bags in the safe. Also a few options to conceal/hide your safe here too https://youtu.be/AfWeVXzfkk8
I suppose people who have watched youtube videos about safes and hiding things, have eyeballs on them though.
Ultimately you just need to find ways to get creative. A false wall would be a great start. In my old home, I had multiple neighbors amazed at how much food I had stored (grains & beans in buckets) behind a few decorative panels that they assumed were just covering plumbing.
The biggest key is, "Out of sight, out of mind"
I built in some hidden spots in my house, for most of my shiny, and leave a small amount in my safe.
If you're putting it in concrete, make a rebar "cage" around it.
At that point you could just use Tupperware and it would be secure.
The word is rebar. And I agree with you. I've never mixed concrete but I bet I could do this by watching a couple of videos. Put the safe in a hole in the floor with rebar and fill it with a cubic yard of concrete. Pull a rug over it.
Damn! That’s beautiful! Pull a rug over it.
Thank you sir. Hate when I mess that word up
You’re being funny right?
Not really. You could use any container if it's actually in concrete surrounded by rebar, not on concrete. I've done it.
If you're in a medical marijuana state, you may want to ask them. They have a safe weight requirement to be considered to operate. I believe it's 10k lbs. It isn't required to be in concrete but they may be of help to guide you at least.
