How much of Big Lots’s ´merchandise is junk we get from China that you’re encouraged to waste your money on?
rue21 and Express were selling imported fast fashion trash for a while now. I’d love to see a return to clothes that aren’t toxic, are made in the US, and actually last.
If the FDA and Big Pharma get wiped out, do we really need a Walgreens and CVS on almost every corner in America?
It wouldn’t be a bad thing if we start consuming less and increasing quality.
I totally get the sentiment, I literally lost my job on 10/31 due to the factory I was working at closing it's doors. I also understand what the OP means as there are far too many of these types of stores open, pushing the trash on people. It's definitely a double edged sword no matter how you look at it.
And in addition to all the Chinese junk and its impact on American manufacturing, these large chains have been a killer to small businesses across America. Bring small businesses back to main street.
Yes, that’s a problem. But other retail jobs exist. And when we kick the illegal immigrants out, and make hiring less of a bureaucratic mess, there will be even more available.
Sincerely—someone who has worked retail but does not do so at the moment due to working at minimum wage at her university for flexibility during school.
The tiny towns that populate Michigans "up north" areas have Dollar Generals that double as a grocery store. They are like a mini Meijers or Walmart. These small towns dont have a Kroger or such and these Dollar Generals save you a 30+ minute trip to a larger town. Though they are not 'full service' they provide a broad range of groceries including meat and produce.
One closed by me, for example, because like someone already said the two chains merged and each had a store across the street from the other. They didn’t need both.
There was a merger with two Dollar store brands. Some of those closures were more of removing redundancy. Still, I suspect we will to see a bunch more in the New Year. Many are probably praying for a Christmas Miracle to stay solvent.
Family dollar was always an expensive ripoff store from my experience.
Family dollar had like $5 bottles of shit that would only cost $2
Only dollar tree had almost all $1.25 items. at Walmart. Never like family dollar. Until Biden came in and made everything $1.25 and now they have a $3 and $5 section.
Yeah we had some of that here when Mattress Firm bought some other chains, however because they didn't close redundant stores we ended up with the hilarity of two Mattress Firm stores on opposite corners of the same intersection in my town. Somehow they are both still there after nearly a decade now.
A lot of these are mall based or high competition like walgreens/dollar general. I think we will see more close due to internet retail amd high remt prices.
In the cities, probably. But in central PA, it was the big box stores -- known as "discount stores" when they first appeared -- that wiped out entire towns of small-business stores.
The different "dollar stores" are on the "most likely to be robbed" lists. I don't know how they even get cashiers. Besides the fact - why would someone even think about robbing one of those stores. They sell cheap crap and make very little money. I guess because they have more cash customers?
Hard to make the delivery economics work for dollar stores but when bundled with higher margin items these can make sense.
The likes of Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc were primarily profitable only because of prescriptions. The other items they sold didn't have significant profit margins.
Now that prescriptions are under pressure, the business model of pharmacies is collapsing too.
I hadn't realized that CVS was in worse overall shape than Walgreens as around here it's the Walgreens that have been closing left and right while I have yet to see a CVS disappear.
There are quite a few on this list where they just open stores like crazy. I know Dollar General will open dozens of stores in places that already have dozens of stores. Had a new one put in down the street not long ago, its already struggling. They don't do any market research, they just hoover up properties and see if they are profitable in random locations.
Then we just have tons of empty Dollar Generals we now have to find a purpose for.
Family Dollar is the company that owns Dollar Tree, who had to raise their prices for the first time in decades from $1 for everything to $1.25 thanks to Bidenomics. No surprise they're closing lots of stores.
Still, not a great sign. These companies tend to cater to the lower end of the economic spectrum.
I actually don’t mind if some of these close.

As I say, there is a drug dealer on every corner. They go by names like Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid.
I know one damn thing. I am SICK of the prescription drug commercials on TV.
Agreed on both counts.
“I actually don’t mind if some of these close.“
I’m gonna take a really wild guess that neither you nor any of your relatives (that you care about) work at any of these stores. 🤔

Sorry you lost your job. I hope we start to finally see manufacturing return to this country once the tariffs are in place.

Support the family owned, mom & pop sm bizs 👍👏👏👏
Thank you. I turned it around about as quick as I could and got an even better job in less than a month.
Glad to hear it!!

Restructuring is required and it isnt going to be painless. But at the end of the day we will be stronger for it.
Where I live there was a Rite Aid and a Walgreens within 1/2 mile of each other that closed in the past year. Good Riddance.
In my smallish town there was a Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS all on opposite corners.
Almost everything is from China, not just Big Lots.
True. Many generic medications. Lots of clothing.
Big Lots was just the main housewares/appliance brand on here that isn’t Family Dollar/Dollar General

I doubt those are the ones that are closing.

Great comment fren.

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. They are starting to co-brand one store in some areas where there were previously two separately branded stores.
Family dollar was always an expensive ripoff store from my experience. Family dollar had like $5 bottles of shit that would only cost $2

Shouldn't it be family 5 dollar at this point. They should just leave a blank spot where it goes up as inflation goes up.

You must live in a sleepy town..
The scamdemic also killed many small businesses.
Sure did. Killed mine. I had a lovely plant shop. I hated to close it, but I could not keep people there, nor could I afford to keep it open.
Just as planned. It was so obvious with how big stores were allowed to remain open the entire time.
You are so right. That's how it was in central PA, as well.
I miss K-Mart.
When I first started reading this my first thought was 'I really miss Came Apart'! LOL then saw your post :)
A lot of these are mall based or high competition like walgreens/dollar general. I think we will see more close due to internet retail amd high remt prices.
Theft is a big problem in these stores too.
Did t some close because of rampant theft? Guess you could convert to all drive through service.
In the cities, probably. But in central PA, it was the big box stores -- known as "discount stores" when they first appeared -- that wiped out entire towns of small-business stores.
CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens... maybe people are waking up to treatments disguised as cures.
I am surprised actually. I would think that a dollar store would be thriving in today's economy
The different "dollar stores" are on the "most likely to be robbed" lists. I don't know how they even get cashiers. Besides the fact - why would someone even think about robbing one of those stores. They sell cheap crap and make very little money. I guess because they have more cash customers?
And the stores deteriorate a strip mall in short order. Customers are slobs leaving dirty diapers and garbage behind.
Ohhh. This makes sense
Stock in Dollar General is way down.
Awwww....all my fav stores! <intense sarcasm>
i will dearly miss Conn's (not)!!!!!
Everything will be delivered. Watch out, Amazon. You will be facing fierce competition.

I saw a co-branded Dollar Tree / Family Dollar the other day. That was interesting...
Aren’t these all the ones that have gotten looted by the mob kids? 👀👀
Econ collapse? So many of these MAKE SENSE

Just because they’re closing doesn’t mean they’ve stopped building.
