I actually don’t mind if some of these close.

How much of Big Lots’s ´merchandise is junk we get from China that you’re encouraged to waste your money on?

rue21 and Express were selling imported fast fashion trash for a while now. I’d love to see a return to clothes that aren’t toxic, are made in the US, and actually last.

If the FDA and Big Pharma get wiped out, do we really need a Walgreens and CVS on almost every corner in America?

It wouldn’t be a bad thing if we start consuming less and increasing quality.

As I say, there is a drug dealer on every corner. They go by names like Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid.

I know one damn thing. I am SICK of the prescription drug commercials on TV.

“I actually don’t mind if some of these close.“

I’m gonna take a really wild guess that neither you nor any of your relatives (that you care about) work at any of these stores. 🤔

I totally get the sentiment, I literally lost my job on 10/31 due to the factory I was working at closing it's doors. I also understand what the OP means as there are far too many of these types of stores open, pushing the trash on people. It's definitely a double edged sword no matter how you look at it.

Sorry you lost your job. I hope we start to finally see manufacturing return to this country once the tariffs are in place.

And in addition to all the Chinese junk and its impact on American manufacturing, these large chains have been a killer to small businesses across America. Bring small businesses back to main street.

Yes, that’s a problem. But other retail jobs exist. And when we kick the illegal immigrants out, and make hiring less of a bureaucratic mess, there will be even more available.

Sincerely—someone who has worked retail but does not do so at the moment due to working at minimum wage at her university for flexibility during school.

Where I live there was a Rite Aid and a Walgreens within 1/2 mile of each other that closed in the past year. Good Riddance.

Almost everything is from China, not just Big Lots.

True. Many generic medications. Lots of clothing.

Big Lots was just the main housewares/appliance brand on here that isn’t Family Dollar/Dollar General

The tiny towns that populate Michigans "up north" areas have Dollar Generals that double as a grocery store. They are like a mini Meijers or Walmart. These small towns dont have a Kroger or such and these Dollar Generals save you a 30+ minute trip to a larger town. Though they are not 'full service' they provide a broad range of groceries including meat and produce.

I doubt those are the ones that are closing.

One closed by me, for example, because like someone already said the two chains merged and each had a store across the street from the other. They didn’t need both.

There was a merger with two Dollar store brands. Some of those closures were more of removing redundancy. Still, I suspect we will to see a bunch more in the New Year. Many are probably praying for a Christmas Miracle to stay solvent.

Dollar Tree and Family Dollar. They are starting to co-brand one store in some areas where there were previously two separately branded stores.

Family dollar was always an expensive ripoff store from my experience. Family dollar had like $5 bottles of shit that would only cost $2

Only dollar tree had almost all $1.25 items. at Walmart. Never like family dollar. Until Biden came in and made everything $1.25 and now they have a $3 and $5 section.

Shouldn't it be family 5 dollar at this point. They should just leave a blank spot where it goes up as inflation goes up.

Yeah we had some of that here when Mattress Firm bought some other chains, however because they didn't close redundant stores we ended up with the hilarity of two Mattress Firm stores on opposite corners of the same intersection in my town. Somehow they are both still there after nearly a decade now.

A lot of these are mall based or high competition like walgreens/dollar general. I think we will see more close due to internet retail amd high remt prices.

In the cities, probably. But in central PA, it was the big box stores -- known as "discount stores" when they first appeared -- that wiped out entire towns of small-business stores.

The different "dollar stores" are on the "most likely to be robbed" lists. I don't know how they even get cashiers. Besides the fact - why would someone even think about robbing one of those stores. They sell cheap crap and make very little money. I guess because they have more cash customers?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– summersunset01 3 points 147 days ago +3 / -0

And the stores deteriorate a strip mall in short order. Customers are slobs leaving dirty diapers and garbage behind.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– FrenOrFoe 2 points 147 days ago +2 / -0

Hard to make the delivery economics work for dollar stores but when bundled with higher margin items these can make sense.

The likes of Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc were primarily profitable only because of prescriptions. The other items they sold didn't have significant profit margins.

Now that prescriptions are under pressure, the business model of pharmacies is collapsing too.

There are quite a few on this list where they just open stores like crazy. I know Dollar General will open dozens of stores in places that already have dozens of stores. Had a new one put in down the street not long ago, its already struggling. They don't do any market research, they just hoover up properties and see if they are profitable in random locations.

Then we just have tons of empty Dollar Generals we now have to find a purpose for.

Family Dollar is the company that owns Dollar Tree, who had to raise their prices for the first time in decades from $1 for everything to $1.25 thanks to Bidenomics. No surprise they're closing lots of stores.

Still, not a great sign. These companies tend to cater to the lower end of the economic spectrum.

Just because they’re closing doesn’t mean they’ve stopped building.
