The Pacific Rim "ring of fire" is experiencing a lot of earthquakes right now... it would be a shame if a "quake" (MOAB) happened that collapsed that tunnel. Just sayin'....
This would be pretty big news if true, but a websearch of "will cain hegseth panama tunnel" or even just "hegseth panama tunnel china" finds NOTHING where the word "Tunnel" is returned.
Photo of a TV isn't sauce, either.
What a shame. We have LOTS of comment replies here ALL responding as if the subject assertion that "Hegseth said China Is Building A Tunnel Under The Panama Canal" is bona fide verified sauced truth, and there is none.
IT's starting to get painful logging in to GAW and finding so little actual verification or research, and almost wall to wall simple .... reaction. To storylines, to narratives, to claims, but so little sauce or actual real research.
Lol, I'm always late to the party. (Time zones, whatcha gonna do?). Damn. I missed that. My bad.
One reason why I wish that comments where the OP posts sauce could be stickied. More often than not, they get buried under the larger volume of comments when the order is by upvote.
But just to follow up on this, I'm wondering why Hegseth spoke about this in relation to CCP China. All indications are that it's a South Korean consortium who are doing this. (See below). I suppose it's possible that Panama might have been funding this under the CCCP Belt & Road initiative, but so far I can't see evidence for that.
The two articles above have no mention of China, but the third one does:
The South Korean HPH Joint Venture, composed of Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co, POSCO and Hyundai Engineering Co have granted to China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) the excavation by TBM of the 5.3 km underwater section between the Panama Pacífico and Albrook stations of the Metro Line 3 in Panama.
HPH JV is responsible for selecting any subcontractor, and MPSA is responsible for ensuring that the company meets the minimum requirements of experience and financial capacity for the assigned tasks.
So it looks like the S-Korean consortium chose the China Railway Tunnel Group to dig the tunnel part of the larger project.
Of course, if a CCP company is involved on any level, they are going to be doing dodgy stuff (spying, surveillance, infiltration, etc), so in that sense, Hegseth's comment is relevant, even though the tunnel itself is part of a larger project which appears to have no direct CCP involvement.
We can speculate that possibly behind the scenes, CCP China used leverage to get the S-Korean consortium to subcontract to a Chinese company for the tunnel, but without direct evidence, it's speculation.
Aside: I don't mean it as a slur on your posting, but the fact still remains that the comment section is full of reactions (how many even listened to the Hegseth interview? which, yes, he mentions a tunnel, in one small sentence, but zero details) all of which gets lots of upvotes, why the actual verification, digging and investigation gets almost none.
Personally, this is why I think that copy/paste, shoot-from-the-hip posting has a generally deleterious affect on the board.
PS. How did you catch this, Joy? Were you listening to Fox News on the TV and picked up on this? It's an interesting nugget.
But, for example, the spin that Hegseth "just revealed" this to Will Cain is a big leap of logic, the implication (or assumption) being that somehow its secret or hidden, which the evidence indicates is not the case, but which a whole army of frogs simply accepted and then commented on. Aka knock-on effect.
The information is quite well known, publicly, and even though in the context that Hegseth is discussing, it's relevant, it's not exactly as if the CCP China as a nation state is digging some secretive tunnel under the Panama Canal for nefarious purposes.
Not saying that CCP China isn't nefarious. It is, and everything they control is bad news, including all the companies that ultimately are subordinate to the CCP. But "China is building a tunnel" is kinda different from "A CCP controlled company has been awarded the contract to dig a tunnel under the Panama Canal as part of a larger project". Don't you think?
(See the few links I dug up, thanks primarily to the link from u/Zappo which got me headed in the right direction, because I'm quite familiar with South Korean conglomerates.)
And if the collapse of that tunnel caused the destruction of the Panama Canal?
Kinetic war
I've been saying for a long time now (year?). China gets taken out in one single night.
Practically the twinkling of an eye with weapons that will look like magic.
It prob seems silly that so many of my posts/comments lately have started with "I've been saying for a long time now..." 🤪

Contrary to pop culture, virtually all (near-future) time travel is military in nature. Mostly reconnaissance.
That may explain why the Panamanians seem very cooperative with the US. This whole situation is far from being finished. I am just glad some action is finally being taken about what is taking place there. I have been sounding the alarm about those ports for years along with other strategic infrastructure the CCP has been appropriating around the world.
No. This undoubtedly is a breach of the Canal treaty (which itself is a bit of a fiction, since the text signed by Carter is not the text signed by Panama), and U.S. forces need to land and establish control over the tunnel---and inspect it with a fine-tooth comb. Then figure out what to do. Backfill with tailings might be the answer that does not pose any seismic problems.
Fox finally put up a link to Secretary Hegseth's interview on Will Cain's show today. It's a packed almost 17 minutes 😸 start watching at 8:30 mark if you want to hear about the tunnel
Q: Is China building a tunnel UNDER the Panama Canal?
A: Yes, a Chinese company, the China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG), is involved in building a tunnel under the Panama Canal as part of Panama’s Metro Line 3 monorail project. The tunnel, which began construction in 2024, will allow trains to pass beneath the canal to connect Panama City with western suburbs, addressing traffic congestion. It’s a 5.3-kilometer underwater section, bored 65 meters below the seabed, and is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The project is led by a South Korean consortium, HPH Joint Venture, with CRTG as a subcontractor handling the tunnel boring. This is a civilian infrastructure project, not a shipping canal, and is separate from the Panama Canal’s operations, which remain under Panamanian control.
It is part of a project to establish a 34 km (21 miles) rail link in Panama City aimed at alleviating road congestion, reportedly. The tunnel is to go from one side of the Canal to the other side, apparently in the Panama City section.
Well, yeah. He actually knows a few facts (which too many here seem to not worry about that much).
It's a no brainer that where a CCP China company is involved they are going to do dodgy stuff that advances CCP operations, but the project itself isn't a CCP project, and the tunnel is only a part of the much larger project. (surveillance, spying, infiltration)
But the fact that he mentions the tunnel in a tiny sentence (and no more) indicates that it's of very small significance in the scale of things. Digging around this yields facts. I'm a bit disappointing that so many seem to have zero interest in facts, and lots of interest in just going wildly off on speculations.
But Kudos to all the actual digging frogs here, like u/Perspectives2025, like u/Pugsan, like u/Zappo, etc. Sadly, their input is right at the bottom of the comment section, due to receiving no upvotes.
Personally, I wonder why the original post inspires so much reaction and speculation, all of which gets upvoted, and so little digging for actual facts, which sadly gets very little upvotes.
A few details: The tunnel is part of a larger 21 mile monorail project in Panama City aimed at revealing traffic congestion (reportedly). A South Korean consortium was granted the whole contract, including tunnel design, but subcontracted to the "China Railway Tunnel Group" to do the actual tunnel work.
Seems they would need permission from us to have a train tunnel construction project or any project there!! They really felt it was theirs, apparently. They are so screwed.
Nonsense. Pure, unadulterated bullshit. As with the D.U. M. B. urban legend, where are the millions of cubic yards of spoil from such a structure? The machine that bores a useful tunnel is around the size of a medium-sized ship, where is it? The “starter” hole would be large enough to bury said ship and be easily visible from the air and probably from space. Where are the pictures of that and the resulting spoil bank?
Actually factual. What's kinda dumb is that so many people immediately LEAP to the conclusion that it's some sort of secret tunnel or that China is leading it to undermine .... the USA.
The tunnel is part of a much larger project, and a South Korean consortium has the contract. They subcontracted the CRTG to do the actual tunnel work.
It's a no brainer that where a CCP China company is involved they are going to do dodgy stuff that advances CCP operations, but the project itself isn't a CCP project.

Let them finish it, then take it away.
Yep! This is the first I've heard of the tunnel, no wonder POTUS is pi$$ed!

it might, so collapse it far away from the tunnel.
Damn all these pedo tunnels. Lol
Just punch a hole in the canal, and fill the tunnel with water.
Ahhh. I like. You sir are a problem solver!
It's a Chinese built tunnel. Probably already collapsed.
No fresh water ,no locks, no canal. That's why they are building the demolition/destruction access tunnel
But sir, what of all the water leaves the canal and it dries up like Guam flips over sometimes?
Wash ,flip repeat. It's like living in God's snow globe then ? Only he does it with magnets ?
Panama government might be dirty to allow that tunnel to be built in secret
I mean, it's Panama. What's Panama known for?
International laundromat.
Panama papers, 'member?

Absolutely...took big bucks from China probably
Not in secret at all...

What's curious is that it's a Korean consortium that was given the contract, not a CCP Chinese one.
Yup.knew this last week when seismics indicated tunnel blasting etc in the canal area. Just didn't know China was involved.
Didn't hear that..
I see that tunnel flooding very soon. And I also see a lot of issues for the Panamanian government because they obviously knew about it.
That may explain why the Panamanians seem very cooperative with the US. This whole situation is far from being finished. I am just glad some action is finally being taken about what is taking place there. Better hope it doesn't that fresh water is what makes the whole thing operate
Why is it important that it's fresh water?
The lake water is used to fill the locks each time a boat enters. Then released to lower level back down for next boat. (water drains to the sea )
And the Lake level depends on rain water
Thanks for the info. I didn't know this.
Doesn’t sound like anything a Seal Team can’t handle.
Start backing cement trucks near one of the upper air vents.
Make sure its a slurry-type mix.

Gee a little bunker buster that was mistakenly dropped could make that tunnel go bye-bye in a hurry.
That would be great except the tunnel is under the canal.
Yep , Thinking is hard for most.

Gee what for? They gonna drain the canal? Is it parallel to the canal or across it?
