This would be pretty big news if true, but a websearch of "will cain hegseth panama tunnel" or even just "hegseth panama tunnel china" finds NOTHING where the word "Tunnel" is returned.

What a shame. We have LOTS of comment replies here ALL responding as if the subject assertion that "Hegseth said China Is Building A Tunnel Under The Panama Canal" is bona fide verified sauced truth, and there is none.
IT's starting to get painful logging in to GAW and finding so little actual verification or research, and almost wall to wall simple .... reaction. To storylines, to narratives, to claims, but so little sauce or actual real research.

One reason why I wish that comments where the OP posts sauce could be stickied. More often than not, they get buried under the larger volume of comments when the order is by upvote.
But just to follow up on this, I'm wondering why Hegseth spoke about this in relation to CCP China. All indications are that it's a South Korean consortium who are doing this. (See below). I suppose it's possible that Panama might have been funding this under the CCCP Belt & Road initiative, but so far I can't see evidence for that.

So it looks like the S-Korean consortium chose the China Railway Tunnel Group to dig the tunnel part of the larger project.
Of course, if a CCP company is involved on any level, they are going to be doing dodgy stuff (spying, surveillance, infiltration, etc), so in that sense, Hegseth's comment is relevant, even though the tunnel itself is part of a larger project which appears to have no direct CCP involvement.
We can speculate that possibly behind the scenes, CCP China used leverage to get the S-Korean consortium to subcontract to a Chinese company for the tunnel, but without direct evidence, it's speculation.
Aside: I don't mean it as a slur on your posting, but the fact still remains that the comment section is full of reactions (how many even listened to the Hegseth interview? which, yes, he mentions a tunnel, in one small sentence, but zero details) all of which gets lots of upvotes, why the actual verification, digging and investigation gets almost none.
Personally, this is why I think that copy/paste, shoot-from-the-hip posting has a generally deleterious affect on the board.

But, for example, the spin that Hegseth "just revealed" this to Will Cain is a big leap of logic, the implication (or assumption) being that somehow its secret or hidden, which the evidence indicates is not the case, but which a whole army of frogs simply accepted and then commented on. Aka knock-on effect.
The information is quite well known, publicly, and even though in the context that Hegseth is discussing, it's relevant, it's not exactly as if the CCP China as a nation state is digging some secretive tunnel under the Panama Canal for nefarious purposes.
Not saying that CCP China isn't nefarious. It is, and everything they control is bad news, including all the companies that ultimately are subordinate to the CCP. But "China is building a tunnel" is kinda different from "A CCP controlled company has been awarded the contract to dig a tunnel under the Panama Canal as part of a larger project". Don't you think?

Yup.knew this last week when seismics indicated tunnel blasting etc in the canal area. Just didn't know China was involved.

I see that tunnel flooding very soon. And I also see a lot of issues for the Panamanian government because they obviously knew about it.
That may explain why the Panamanians seem very cooperative with the US. This whole situation is far from being finished. I am just glad some action is finally being taken about what is taking place there. I have been sounding the alarm about those ports for years along with other strategic infrastructure the CCP has been appropriating around the world.

No. This undoubtedly is a breach of the Canal treaty (which itself is a bit of a fiction, since the text signed by Carter is not the text signed by Panama), and U.S. forces need to land and establish control over the tunnel---and inspect it with a fine-tooth comb. Then figure out what to do. Backfill with tailings might be the answer that does not pose any seismic problems.

It's a no brainer that where a CCP China company is involved they are going to do dodgy stuff that advances CCP operations, but the project itself isn't a CCP project, and the tunnel is only a part of the much larger project. (surveillance, spying, infiltration)
But the fact that he mentions the tunnel in a tiny sentence (and no more) indicates that it's of very small significance in the scale of things. Digging around this yields facts. I'm a bit disappointing that so many seem to have zero interest in facts, and lots of interest in just going wildly off on speculations.
But Kudos to all the actual digging frogs here, like u/Perspectives2025, like u/Pugsan, like u/Zappo, etc. Sadly, their input is right at the bottom of the comment section, due to receiving no upvotes.

The machine that bores a useful tunnel is around the size of a medium-sized ship, where is it? The “starter” hole would be large enough to bury said ship and be easily visible from the air and probably from space. Where are the pictures of that and the resulting spoil bank?
