I can't find a link to it but I saw an article awhile ago that said there is underground electrical circuitry using anodes and cathodes beneath the Burj Khalifa that keeps the foundational pilings from oxidizing. It's a smart solution and is similar to how underground pipelines are protected.

Sorry, but no such approach. The potential gradient is real and affects the formation of thunderstorms. But the current available is very low. Classroom Van de Graaf generators can produce potentials of up to 400,000 volts, but are driven by a motor that is probably less than 1 horsepower (and the recharge current power will therefore be smaller). If this approach were viable, every house would have an aerial on a mast to provide power.

The Emirates are less harsh than other Arab countries. They have a national lottery now and even sell alcohol in certain restaurants. Women have to dress modestly but dont have to wear head to toe arab slave garb. I wouldnt call them secular like iran was during the shahs years but they arent an isis caliphate either.

My younger brother first went to Abu Dhabi during the Gulf war and was there when the barracks were hit by a scud. Now he goes there every year or two because the middle east was part of his dealer chain when he did vehicle launches for Ford. Now he does parts distribution for the same chains of dealers. Hers had dinner with a few of these Princes a couple times. They own most of the car dealerships.

Well that would be drug trafficking. They would be arrested here in Texas for that.

Dubai is great and beautiful. Just be careful so you know the rules before going. I had to check beforehand on whether one of my meds would be allowed or not. It was not allowed so I didn't take it. Don't get shitfaced-drunk, stay away from a lot of PDA (public displays of affection) or skimpy/sheer clothes, don't do stupid stuff you wouldn't do at home, and you should be fine.

You can drink at hotels and sport clubs. When I was there the mall had a 1-bedroom hotel behind the big bar they had (with Guinness on tap). Nobody ever used the "hotel" - it just had to be there.

I took my wife with me on a business trip and she wandered all over Dubai by herself with no issues at all.

Oh - I don't know if they still do it but I used this service that you pay for and someone will come pick you up at your gate when you arrive (in the terminal), drive you on an electric cart to customs, get you through faster, take you to get your bags, and take you to a cab they arranged to take you to your hotel. It's been a while since I was there so I'm sure it changed but it was like $25 or $30 around 2005 or so. They even gave us a water bottle. If you ever go and they still have that service - GET IT. You don't want to stand in line at customs with a bunch of sweaty people.

Yeah it’s safe, and it’s highly international… a lot of ex-pats from many countries.

It is also dry (alcohol), but there are a few places to get a beer 🍻
