The doctrine for Special Military Operations is to NOT conduct decapitation-strikes (and limit civilian deaths, BTW): that is, Russians won't take out country leaders during an SMO. Even if Z is not reognized constitutionally, by Ukraine's own constitution, as a legitimate leader, the little green goblin with the Midas touch is the one everyone is brabbling about.
So, according to this distinction, decapitation-strikes are scripted to happen during war.
For this reason, I do not support the 'taking out of Z mantra, because it would mean WAR had to have been declared.

Well, I prefer to Russian stats, for most things, but I used the Ukrainian figures because they are likely to make sure they count as many as they can. Nevertheless, it is impossible to tell accurately, until the fat lady sings. Keep in mind that the Ukrainians are on the retreat, and oftern in too much of a hurry to pick up all the dead - leaving that task for the Russians. - That's why I use Russian numbers for the Ukrainian dead. For the same reason.
So to answer your question, as I said before:
Russia has had drones circling over Z's motorcade for months. If he moves, they know it.

He seems to be the most likely. He was already a placeholder leader for Putin until the Russian constitution was amended to allow Putin to serve longer. Medvedev is a long-time ally and a fierce supporter of Putin. He's an ardent Russian nationalist and shares most of his views on both domestic and foreign policy. To the extent that they differ meaningfully here, Medvedev has less patience than Putin and has called regularly for Russia to take a more aggressive approach to the SMO and finish it quickly. Putin has restrained him in the interests of trying to minimize Russian casualties, minimize Ukrainian civilian casualties, and keeping the door open for diplomacy. Putin seems to be impressed with China's economic approach to geopolitics: trade with everyone, get rich as hell, buy off whoever you need to.
Medvedev, for his part, was the man put in charge of mobilizing the Russian military industry to support the SMO. He has been remarkably successful, supplying the RAF (Russian Armed Forces, not Royal Air Force, here) with adequate tanks and armored vehicles to replace losses, ammunition, and importantly, getting SU-35 jets into play ahead of schedule. The SU-57 (the 5th gen opposite of the F-35/F-22) is still nowhere near ready and is still deep in re-development. Most importantly, they've rapidly cycled through dozens of drone designs, improving as they go, and they're producing upgraded Geran (Geranium/Shahed) drones at scale along with the smaller FPVs, but radio-controlled, and fiber-optic guided. The man can run a command economy Soviet style.

I’m sure if - heaven forbid - if something happens to Putin - they will have a succession plan in place and while Putin is restrained at present, any minute those restraints will come off but rest assured, his successor will not be so restrained. Putin is extremely popular, but the Russian citizens themselves will demand not just the eradication of Ukraine, but even those that has supported it for some 10 years. What many in the west and EU/UK don’t seem to understand is that the Russian people - including Putin and his Cabinet- is that their faith in God is No 1 and that if they die they will go to be with their Heavenly Father. They will gladly die to protect their Motherland. You cannot fight against that faith. The videos on the Akhmat Special Forces is an eye opener.
Had Z succeeded, Putin would have been replaced by a strong man that would be a nightmare for Ukraine, one who wouldn't hesitate to retaliate for the assassination by dropping nukes all over the country.
Maybe not nukes. Too nasty for everyone and not really required. But all restraint would have been removed. Up to this point, Putin has been keeping the military operations on a short leash, strictly concerned to attain a high exchange ratio in order to demobilize Ukraine. Territory was secondary; the land wasn't going to go anywhere. But now, pushing the Ukrainians back to the frontiers of the Novorossiya oblasts is preparatory to consolidating sovereign control.

They can now. Maybe there was a “Trust The Plan” on the Russian side too? All the corruption that Trump is dealing with now and in Trump’s first term, Putin has already faced. Around about that time, Generals were swapped out. The military has been purged. The same corrupt oligarchs that tried to assassinate Putin a decade ago are gone - those left understand their lives are being watched. The same issues, feminism, transgender, lbgt at this end have been dealt with. The family is the head of society, not an alternate feminist agenda. Security of food, natural resources, manufacturing has made Russia not need any other country to trade with. This has allowed them to focus on infrastructure like roads, bridges, etc. Schooling is way above the West. Their military is the most prepared, capable and modern in the world. They are building their own space station. etc. etc. All the areas Trump is wanting to gut and improve, Putin has been there, done that.
I genuinely believe that the Ukraine war is all a show to achieve an important objective of eliminating Biolabs and Nazi sympathizers! Trump got bigger fish than Zelensky to capitulate back in 2017 and Zelensky is actually an actor in real life!
