Billions. Might be enough that some of these companies end up going out of business.

Here in Volusia County, FL, a 12 pk of a name brand soda like Pepsi or Coke will run you almost $15 per, depending on the city and/or store you purchase it from. I've seen prices anywhere from $10.50 to $15/change all over this county.

Why am I not surprised? Thanks for sharing.

I sometimes wonder if the whole popcorn theme has something to do with Walmart.

I remember reading a long time ago that when he first opened Walmart, Mr. Sam would make popcorn in the store to attract customers with the aroma.

In my experience, they STEAL for their spending money. The one who hit us up with a check forgery ring was in Sect 8 housing, on Medicaid, had about 7 kids from who knows how many fathers, food benefits, etc. When all survival needs are met by the taxpayers, they steal from us for cash! They can't work, they would lose their benefits . . .

what a country . . .

There are some that do. I can say that MOST of the families that receive "Food Stamps" are very good people and actually NEED them.

Yes, there is a good bit of fraud. Yes, illegals have multitudes of children and get rediculous amounts of free food and benefits to patly for them. That can and must be stopped.

The program itself is a God Send for many families who are just trying to survive.

Potatoes. Oatmeal. Some noodle brand I have never seen before or since. That is what my mother got from the food program when I was little.

I hate oatmeal, now. But I still ate it as an adult when times got rough. It took me a long time to forgive pasta too.

Oddly, potatoes I never grew tired of. The Irish and Russians were on to something.

We have credit cards. They are given EBT cards with money balances put on the card from the taxpayers / government that they can use for purchases. THEY do not earn the money on their EBT cards, it is from the government. THEY do not have to repay anything, but we have to repay what we spend with our credit cards. It is a SCAM on the taxpayers.

I work at the Welfare office. I can tell you without the slightest bit of doubt or exaggeration that there are probably only 5% of the people receiving Food Stamps that really need or deserve them

The people who REALLY need and deserve them the most are the elderly who are living on Social Security alone. Most of the time, they don't qualify, or the amount they do qualify for is about $20 a month.

Besides all the "green card holders" that come here, (and trust me, there are w-a-y more than you are being told) a very, very large portion of the citizens that are on food stamps are the lazy, crazy and criminals who lie about everything.

In concept, food stamps are a good idea, but even the ones that legitimately need them, think it becomes an entitlement and a lifestyle once they get on them. They never want to get off them and get really, really nasty when they are told they no longer qualify for them.

They were meant to be a TEMPORARY help, but there are now two and three generations that believe it is their right to receive them no matter what.

TBH, it depends. When welfare is baked into the culture, it will take generations to get the desired change. Also, just taking soda and candy away from the approved list doesn't change much, people aren't gonna start leaving the system.

The system and rules for it are designed to keep you there forever as a lifestyle, not to help get you off once on.

A maximum time to be on the benefit would also be helpful. Illinois has the limit set effectively to "lifetime" atm, hardly helpful.

You got it in reverse though. Most people are the exploiters. Not the needy. And most of the needy will stand on stubborn pride and say "I dont need your charity" id say its a 80/20 split and only 30-40% of the real needy ever get anything

They can't work, they would lose their benefits . . .

And therein lies the problem. There needs to be an incentive/ reward of some kind to work, rather than a penalty for working. Each person is different. Some are lazy, and don't want to work. Some have few skills. Some are physically/ mentally damaged.

Being unable to communicate is considered a "disability". But that needs re-evaluated. That's how many foreigners get on "welfare/SSI", because they can't communicate. BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW ENGLISH. This is not a justification for government benefits in my opinion. This is an opportunity to insist they learn English.

I know someone who could work only a few days per month, not even the number of hours they allow, and only when the brain was functioning well. Otherwise he would get overwhelmed and totally withdraw from all social interaction. Under stress he could not talk. Once worked for ID Software on what was supposed to be a 1 month project; they kept adding more projects and tighter deadlines. When he quit, he turned off his computer, went to bed, and stayed there for 3 months, in silence, alone, only coming out for bath and eating. He made very good money for those few hours (genius programmer), and even the minimal hours would have exceeded the max amount of $$. The work was sporadic, and his brainpower was also sporadic, so if he made over the minimum for 2-3 months, the benefits would have stopped, even if he didn't/ couldn't work for the next year. And more paperwork would be required to get it restarted.

So what I'm saying is that we need to get the deadbeats back working, train them on a skill if necessary, but don't apply the exact same rules to every person. Teach them how to eat right. Having no skills and too many babies is not a mental disorder. Being fat and lazy is not a medical disorder, but it can turn into one because of eating choices.

Our ancestors had to work to live. WE have to work to live. THEY need to work to live! There is charity for those who cannot work, but our society is corrupt with too easy benefits for the undeserving.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– Rootcause 4 points 311 days ago +4 / -0

Yeah all part of Lyndon Johnston's "Great Society". It's really great isn't it?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– ArmyLady 2 points 310 days ago +2 / -0

He claimed the "Great Society" [paid by taxpayers] would have the blacks voting for demoncrats for 200 years! He destroyed the black family by giving welfare if there was no man in the household, so the men left or were pushed out by the single mothers who could benefit financially from illegitimate children. They didn't CARE who they screwed, the lowest of low-lives, b/c Uncle Sugar would support them! Why find a decent guy who could support a family??

The black family was fine in the ~1950s. The blacks are not innocent in being corrupted by welfare. There were black churches who praised the Lord. WHY did the black community fall for this slavery to the democratic state?? Kids raised by grandmothers, not fathers or even grandfathers in the picture. WHY??

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– Rootcause 3 points 310 days ago +3 / -0

Yes Johnston did say that about the blacks voting for the demoncrats. He certainly did destroy the black family.

I was born in 52' so I remember what it was like for black families "back in the day". No welfare but intact black families (for the most part) - not much different than white families. I believe we are now looking at the 3rd or 4th generations of black families on welfare. Welfare is ALL they have known! Of course white families are falling in the same welfare trap.

I suspect that these companies will do fine, and notice only a blip in their sales. After all, people addicted to their sugar products won't be put off by a mere EBT policy, they will get them no matter what. They may divert their own funds to buy them, or steal them, or let their kids do without food, all to satisfy their hunger-addiction for their sugary snacks.

I also think more than half the people will continue to buy it with their own money like they do with alcohol and cigarettes. Some people on EBT get paid in cash so they never report how much they make.

There will be more fraud with EBT because more people will sell these cards on the street to buy what they want.

Serious question: Will non-sugar soft drinks still be covered by EBT?

Plenty of people are drinking Diet Coke/Pepsi/whatever for the caffeine because it gets them through a workday. Of course, we all know President Trump runs the world on Diet Coke lol.

I wonder if non-sugar soft drinks will still be allowed.

I would guess not that much. 25% would be a big sales cut but most EBT recipients have some cash, often more then they tell the welfare office. They will be deciding between alcohol, nails or a new car. It's unlikely that soda will take the hit. With all the people complaining about rich food stamp recipients a lot of them are skipping nails or nice cars to look poor.
