First, I wonder if Elon will incorporate into these robots Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics"? If not, they might turn out to be mankind's worst enemy.
Second, as the world becomes more and more saturated with AI and automatons and people further distance themselves from fellow humans, how long before people dying in nursing homes will have no one at their side when they die except for a robot holding their hands?
I have to admire Elon's mad genius, but I have yet to own a Tesla or EV of any kind, and I don't want to have anything to do with robots.
Thank you, I can't believe we're the only ones here who read sci Fi. Even if we go back to being a high trust society and technology isn't being invariably used against us anymore I still see this as a negative for humanity.
Off topic but, does anyone have a good list of recent sci-fi that dos not lean so heavily on fantasy? It seems like everything I read now is so far from the foundations of sci-fi and always just goes to magic or some other cheap way of progressing a story.
EV’s are pretty fun…until you’re out of warranty and the battery needs replacing. If you don’t have an extra 10-20k laying around to get it fixed, your EV becomes a giant pile of junk, in a day.
"I think it's going to be the biggest product of all time, by far
Like bigger than cell phones, bigger than anything. I guess the way to think about it is that every human on Earth is going to want to have their own personal R2-D2 C-3PO
I think there could be tens of billions of Optimus robots out there
We're going to launch on the fastest production ramp of any product, of any large complex manufactured product ever. And starting with building a million unit production line in Fremont. And then a 10 million unit per year production line here...
I don't know where we're going to put the 100 million unit production line. Maybe on Mars, I don't know
But I think it's going to literally get to 100 million a year, maybe even a billion a year"
I'm still waiting to see if they'll mow my lawn without having to get a 2nd mortgage to afford it. Edit: It's gotta pull weeds too, almost forgot that.
I’ve been following Optimus for the last year or so. Purchased a bunch of Tesla stock last year because he’s right, this is big. We are in our early seventies and live out in a rural area. There is so much we can no longer do because our bodies are giving out. I am 100%on board for an Optimus to help with things like bring in groceries, help with yard work, cook, clean etc ..honestly these could be a real help for the elderly and a companion if they live alone. Looks like the price will be less than a car. They can’t drive yet and not sure if they are going for that but as a companion for the elderly and disabled they could be a God send. I would love to be a tester.

My opinion, like most seniors, does not matter for the future. I still have one though. I escaped to the very rural hills of Vermont 40 years ago, to live the life I wanted to, simple, low tech, organic, unplugged for most of the day. I embrace the ritual of keeping the stove burning, adding wood, through the cold months. I embrace the based neighbors who hunt and fish, make their own ammo, and the fact that our houses are dark by 10pm, and we are up before dawn. I loved working my own land by hand, so that now my gardens are deep bedded. I don't know, this Brave New World is not appealing to me. The softening of men through automation does not appeal to me. I hope the future will still have people and strong men who turn to the natural world to eke out their lives, felling trees and planting them too. Glad I am 75 and will not live to see it all get built up only to fall. Because it will.
Nobody really wants to talk about this, but it's inevitable. In fact, I suspect it's been done already, but not widely publicized. Its first major appearance will probably be in Korea or Japan.
Just send in the robots to take the land. On the other hand robots can make love not war. And the working robots could vote. I don’t like where this is headed.
But the segway is something very very few people actually need or can use. Too inconvenient - can't carry any cargo with you - or if you don't live in a tightly packed urban center, too impractical to get around with - and if you do, some selfish asshole will steal the bitch right out from under you
I see the robot's future as Elon does: unlimited except by our own willingness and skill at programming them not to harm us or rule over us
I wasn't referring to functionality, just the media hype.
(Remember, the predictions about people wanting the Segway were much higher before people got to try them. Turns out the 2-wheel inline electric scooter had a better form factor, not to mention cost. Switch out all those pay-per-minute electric scooters for Segways and the Segway's sales would've blown past their projections.)
I agree the functionality is far superior to a Segway. As are the potential problems. I'd like to prevent them from being used as salesmen ... I get enough spam phone calls and junk mail without a line of robots waiting to ring my doorbell.
Thinking about it, I suspect the form & cost factor are similar to the Segway, in that specialized robots for common tasks will be easier to deploy. We'll see.
I suggest to watch "the most horrifying Sci fi movie ever written ". It follows the growth of "prime intellect" an AI quantum computers struggle dealing with humanity
The answer is no.
People don't even use digital headsets (i.e.,oculus), even though they attempt to bring them back all of the time.
Therefore, the answer is still no.

Not recent. David Brin's startide rising and the uplift war are great but not super well known.
Thanks, I’ll check them out
Elon is very much aware of the 3 laws

Or spontaneously bursts into flames in your garage.
It's apparently an option.
Good, that makes more for me :)
You're welcome to mine, anon.
Ebwey robot needs a big switch on its back. Hardwired main power breaker.

If it replaces public servants, I’m happy. Someone doing their BS jobs, but efficiently.
So just add the capabilities of AI conversations, and no one will need other people anymore.
Certainly we will not need people imported by the tens of millions, to vote democrat, b/c "who will clean our toilets?"
I do not want one. Please make sure they cannot vote! In that case, they are an improvement over massive illegal migration.
Good, that way I can have two :)
Anyone else? I'm going for seven

I think I might be with you

replacing well raised children with robots
All of this, on a silver platter. Well said!
iRobot springs to mind.

All it would take is one "virus" to reprogram those things into becoming weapons.
They could easily be taken over by outside operators, the same way self-driving cars can be taken over.
I wonder what precautions are being taken against that.
Not enough precaution taken probably
"Move fast and break things"
I am not 100% convinced this will be a good thing
That is a very short amount of time before there are more robots than humans.
Maybe that's what the covid shots were all about after all
Professional whores are getting nervous...
They're about to be out of a job...
Humanity getting hustled out of every single side hustle there is...even the world's oldest profession.
It's coming...pun intended.

You see clearly. Once the illegals are kicked out, I can easily see the left screaming for Robot Rights.
Reminds me of the Segway. Here's hoping.

Will these run on the same batteries that can spontaneously catch fire during charging?
Fremont. In California.
Why, of all states, would you establish a gargantuan mfg operation of all time in that state
i think the original TESLA auto plant is in Fremont.
I have questions tho...
Can it stack hay?
Can it clean a stall?
How often does it catch on fire?
u/#catdance
They need to make the robots pay employee taxes,if they replace humans.
Many of these companies received tax breaks based on the number of people they hire.....
Until he makes the cat girl model/version, I'm not interested.
I want an A'nold version and have him carry around a shotgun
I suggest to watch "the most horrifying Sci fi movie ever written ". It follows the growth of "prime intellect" an AI quantum computers struggle dealing with humanity
Can they sleep in the garage? Handy asst for old people to carry heavy stuff, but don't want him standing around like a suit of armor.
😆😆🤭🤭👌
Looks like the robots in the movie I Robot-----I hope we don't have the same problem that was in the movie!
Brings up a lot of questions
A lot of these things can be done by humans so there is a question of how to best make use of human labor
There's concerns about safety and security
There's questions of what specifically you might want to use this for over a human
Etc.
The answer is no. People don't even use digital headsets (i.e.,oculus), even though they attempt to bring them back all of the time. Therefore, the answer is still no.
